The Ithaca Klezmer Quartet
The Kleinhans Centerstage Concert Series welcomes The Ithaca Klezmer Quartet, on May 22nd at 3pm. Hailing from the shores of Lake Cayuga, the group is composed of four friends who have been playing klezmer music for more than a decade. Jennie Lavine (clarinet), a native of Ithaca, has performed and toured around the U.S. with klezmer bands from Michigan to New Orleans. Ryan Zawel (tuba/trombone), a music educator and professional musician in the Ithaca area, has been leading various Jewish music groups in the area for nearly two decades. Greg Ezra (drums), a professor of chemistry at Cornell University, is a genre-crossing multi-instrumental percussion maven, equally at home playing jazz, klezmer, or mevlevi music. Led by Buffalo native David Zakalik (piano/accordion), the IKQ will perform old-world and American-style klezmer music, traditional Chassidic melodies, and a few original compositions.
