SUMMARY:CANCELED -- Habib Koité and Bamada
DESCRIPTION:Due to the impending weather situation and the difficult travel conditions that may arise from it\, tonight’s concert at Kleinhans Music Hall featuring Habib Koité and Bamada has unfortunately been canceled. All tickets will be refunded in full. Please contact the Box Office with any questions at (716) 885-5000.\n\nKleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Habib Koité and Bamada\, with opening act the African American Cultural Center Dance and Drummer Company\, to the Mary Seaton Room on Thursday\, November 17th at 7:30 PM. \nOne of Africa’s most popular and recognized musicians\, Habib Koité is a modern troubadour with extraordinary appeal because Koité’s musicianship\, wit and wisdom translate across cultures. Hailing from the musically prolific West African nation of Mali\, the guitarist and composer has been named the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone. Over the past decade\, his artistry and magnetic personality have made him an international star\, delighting audiences the world over\, and placing him firmly among the leading figures in contemporary world music. Bonnie Raitt proclaims\, “first there was Hendrix\, then Stevie Ray\, and now Habib.” \nHabib’s much-anticipated new release\, Kharifa\, was recorded entirely in Bamako. The sound of Mali\, its rich and diversified musical traditions\, and its instruments permeate the music of this superb project. It can be said that the Malian guitarist has matured\, evolved\, while once again successfully keeping one foot firmly anchored in the past. The original compositions and covers that form the backbone of this new album reflect the griot’s open spirit\, his willingness to travel through the rich Malian heritage while building the foundations of a resolutely modern music\, also influenced by Western rock and folk. \nOften compared to Eric Clapton\, the Malian reveals himself to be closer to a JJ Cale\, in his manner of occupying space with the guitar\, playing the note rather than notes\, allowing arpeggios to flow through the percussion\, caressing while directing with true virtuosity\, the rhythmic breath of each track on the album. \nHabib Koité takes his time. \nThis shows in his interest and involvement in everyday life in Bamako. Without ever denying the problems that plague his city and country – pollution\, poverty\, idleness\, insalubrity\, disease – Habib remains resolutely optimistic\, hopeful\, fighting against intolerance\, ignorance and obscurantism. While Mandé talks about reconciliation\, Kharifa calls for accountability of each individual. “Life is a daily struggle” he sings. \n  \nThanks to our Promotional Partner\, The African American Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:The David Bromberg Quintet
DESCRIPTION:“Bromberg still makes every track shine\, like the A-list session man he’s always been.” – Rolling Stone \nKleinhans Music Hall Presents\nDavid Bromberg Quintet\nJune 15\, 2022\nThe Mary Seaton Room\nJoin us for an intimate evening of blues with the Godfather of Americana\, the David Bromberg Quintet.  Reserved seating tickets are $35. \nAbout David Bromberg\nFor Americana godfather David Bromberg\, it all began with the blues. His incredible journey spans five-and-a-half decades\, and includes – but is not limited to – adventures with Bob Dylan\, George Harrison\, Jerry Garcia\, the Grateful Dead\, Emmylou Harris\, Bonnie Rait and music and life lessons from seminal blues guitarist Reverend Gary Davis\, who claimed the young Bromberg as a son. \nA musician’s musician\, Bromberg’s mastery of several stringed instruments (guitar\, fiddle\, Dobro\, mandolin)\, and multiple styles is legendary\, leading Dr. John to declare him an American icon.  In producing John Hartford’s hugely influential Aereo-Plain LP\, Bromberg even co-invented a genre: Newgrass. \nAdd in a period of self-imposed exile from his passion (1980-2002)\, during which he became a renowned violin expert\, and Wilmington\, Delaware’s cultural ambassador; top that off with a triumphant return to music-making\, and you have an amazing tale leading back to one place: the blues. \nThe David Bromberg Quintet eventually emerged\, settling into its current lineup of Mark Cosgrove (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals)\, Nate Grower (fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar\, vocals)\, Josh Kanusky (drums\, vocals)\, and newest member\, Suavek Zaniesienko (bass\, vocals).  Joining David’s core band are keyboardist extraordinaire Dan Walker on piano\, organ and accordion\, a stellar horn section of Bromberg regulars like Birch Johnson (trombone)\, Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet)\, Matt Koza (tenor sax) and Bob Stewart (tuba) with Larry Campbell on mandolin and pedal steel. \nThe new album\, Big Road\, gives Bromberg fans the most intimate portrait to date of David and the band\, musically and visually. Featuring twelve new tracks\, five hi-def performance videos and a mini-documentary detailing the album’s creation.  We think you’ll agree that this intimate performance with the David Bromberg Quintet is a trip worth taking.

DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall welcomes the long-awaited collaboration between Grammy-nominated Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss with Together At Last!  \nThese two country and folk legends have finally joined forces to share their celebrated music and personal chemistry on stage for the entire performance\, swapping songs\, singing harmony\, and playing guitar on each other’s biggest hits.  Never content to rest on their past achievements\, the pair brings new material to these shows\, along with two careers worth of humorous and heart-warming stories. \n \nKathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss have each carved out careers in popular music with country chart hits spanning two decades.  Suzy’s “Outbound Plane”\, “Aces”\, and “Someday Soon” are among the many songs beloved by country music fans around the world\, as are “Where’ve You Been?”\, “455 Rocket”\, and “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” from Kathy’s deep well of material. Friends since their early days in Nashville\, they had only found a few opportunities to collaborate musically\, notably with “Teach Your Children”\, their Grammy-nominated track from 1994’s “Red\, Hot + Country” compilation. They have “threatened” for years\, and their many fans have clamored for this pairing. \nFans will not want to miss this one-night only event where Kathy & Suzy are Together At Last! \nAbout Kathy Mattea\nHailed by The Washington Post as “one of Nashville’s finest song interpreters\,” Kathy Mattea has enjoyed much success and acclaim during her 35-year career in Country\, Bluegrass and Folk music\, including 2 Grammy wins\, 4 CMA Awards\, 4 #1 country singles\, and five gold albums (plus a platinum Greatest Hits collection)\, with enduring songs such as “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” and the poignant “Where’ve You Been?”\, co-written by her husband\, Jon Vezner with Don Henry.  Her latest album is Pretty Bird\, produced by her old friend\, roots music wizard Tim O’Brien. In addition to creating and recording music and performing live on tour\, Kathy is increasingly involved with public broadcasting\, consulting and contributing on screen in Ken Burns’ 2019 documentary for PBS Country Music\, and recently replacing founder Larry Groce as the host of the long-running NPR show Mountain Stage. \nAbout Suzy Bogguss \nDuring the creative explosion that was country music in the 1990s Suzy Bogguss sold 4 million records with sparkling radio hits like “Outbound Plane”\, “Someday Soon”\, “Letting Go”\, “Drive South”\, and “Hey Cinderella”. But you can’t peg Suzy that easily… \nIn the midst of her country popularity\, she took time off to make a duets album with the legendary Chet Atkins\, an album of modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel\, and an album of original music that landed her at number 4 on the jazz charts. Her folk music roots show through in her frequent appearances on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion\, in the GRAMMY she earned for her work on Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster\, and in her critically acclaimed album and book project\, American Folk Songbook. In addition to her busy touring schedule\, Suzy hosts a weekly live stream\, Wine Down Wednesday\, that’s currently closing in on 100 episodes.

SUMMARY:Bob Poole: Nature Roars Back
DESCRIPTION:Experience an epic African wildlife park through the eyes of an Emmy Award-winning natural history cinematographer. \nA childhood in East Africa gave Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Bob Poole a fierce curiosity about the natural world as well as an adventurous spirit. For a six-part PBS/Nat Geo International series\, Bob drew on that experience to document the rebirth of a lost Eden: Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park\, a jewel of Africa’s parks system until civil war almost destroyed it. There\, he joined forces with rangers and scientists (including his sister\, renowned elephant researcher Joyce Poole)\, on perhaps the biggest conservation project on the planet. He’ll share secrets of filming lions\, crocs\, elephants\, and spectacular scenery\, and tell how he cracked the “Gorongosa code”—learning to read the landscape and find prime locations for filming the park’s spectacular wildlife. \nJoin the acclaimed cinematographer and filmmaker for unforgettable images and stories of Gorongosa’s majestic animals—and learn how the wild places we’ve broken can be put back together. \nTickets are $75 for a VIP experience that includes reserved seating and an invitation to a pre-event reception; $35 for general admission; and $15 for students.\nA two-event National Geographic Live package is available for $140 VIP; $60 general admission.
