His 2022 collaboration with Khruangbin\, “Ali\,” pays tribute to his father (legendary guitar player Ali Farka Touré)\, receiving international acclaim. Touré’s live performances are highly energized\, dazzling crowds with his charisma and talent. \nOpening for Vieux is the Paul Kozlowski Quintet! Paul C Kozlowski is an award-winning composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and recording artist known for his genre-bending music as well as his scores for avant-garde theater productions.  Joining him onstage culled from Buffalo’s own talent pool will be Vanessa Snowden on violin\, David Phillips on cajon\, James Benders on bass\, and Nelson Rivera on woodwinds and percussion. They will be performing one set of Kozlowski’s compositions inspired by Mediterranean\, Baltic\, and North African sensibilities. \nAbout Vieux Farka Touré\nVieux was initially a drummer / calabash player at Mali’s Institut National des Arts\, but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Touré was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him\, and these recordings\, which can be heard on Vieux’s debut CD\, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Touré played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days\, at peace with\, and proud of\, his son’s talent as a musician. \nIn 2005\, Eric Herman (still Vieux’s manager today) of Modiba Productions expressed an interest in producing an album for Vieux; this led to Vieux’s self-titled debut album\, released by World Village in 2007. Ali Farka Touré’s work to tackle the problem of malaria is continued as 10% of proceeds are donated to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké through which over 3000 mosquito nets have been delivered to children and pregnant women in the Timbuktu region of Mali. On this first album\, Vieux pays homage to his father and follows Ali’s musical tradition\, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabaté\, as well as his late father. \nOn his second record\, Fondo on Six Degrees (2009)\, Vieux branched out and presented his own sound: while remaining true to the roots of his father’s music he uses elements of rock\, Latin music\, and other African influences. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim from across the globe\, and Vieux was clearly moving out of his father’s shadow. \nBy June 2010\, Vieux was performing at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. That month Vieux also released his first live album\, LIVE. His live performances are highly energized and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar\, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile\, both of which captivate audiences from all audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages). \nIn 2011 Vieux released his 3rd studio album\, The Secret\, so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son. It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno (of the Soulive trio) and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews\, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. The title track is the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father. With the heralded release of The Secret\, Vieux Farka Touré has clearly established himself as one of the world’s rare musical talents and guitar virtuosos with a distinct style that always pays homage to the past while looking towards the future. \nVieux released The Tel Aviv Session (Cumbancha) in April 2012\, a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed ‘The Touré-Raichel Collective’ that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as a masterpiece and one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music\, drawing comparisons to Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder’s legendary Talking Timbuktu album. \nIn 2013\, Vieux Farka Touré’s beautiful and critically acclaimed album Mon Pays was released as an homage to his homeland. Being that his native Mali had recently been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012\, Mon Pays was devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his native Mali. Translated as ‘My Country\,’ this predominantly acoustic undertaking transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation. Two songs on the project – ‘Future’ and ‘Peace’ feature Sidiki Diabate’s kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Touré’s spectacular guitar work. Both tracks represent an important generational “passing of the torch” as Sidiki’s father\, Toumani is considered one of the greatest living kora masters and was a close friend of Vieux’s father Ali. Mon Pays has been widely hailed as the most mature and lovely record yet from one of this generation’s most exciting artists to come out of Mali and one of world music’s true rising stars. \nVieux reunited with Idan Raichel in Paris to record\, release and subsequently tour their 2nd collaborative album as The Touré-Raichel Collective in 2014. The result was yet another musical and critical triumph\, titled ‘The Paris Session’ (Cumbancha) revered by many as not just a musical gem for the ages\, but a powerful testimonial to the power of art and fraternity to transcend vast cultural and political divides. In 2015\, Vieux released another unexpected\, genre-bending collaborative album\, this time with New York-based singer Julia Easterlin\, aptly titled ‘Touristes’. The album shot to the top of the iTunes World chart and earned critical acclaim\, including that of John Schaefer (NPR) who called it “brilliant.” On April 7\, 2017\, Vieux released his next album ‘Samba’\, recorded live in front of a small audience at Applehead Studio in Woodstock\, NY. \nWhen the COVID pandemic hit in 2020 and all touring ground to a halt\, Vieux stayed focussed on his craft at home. He worked tirelessly in the studio he built at his family’s compound (which he named ‘Studio Ali Farka Toure’ in honor of his late father) to record his debut album for World Circuit Records/BMG\, the prestigious UK-based record label with whom his father recorded and released most of his own work. Osborne has followed her restless musical heart\, exploring a diverse range of genres: pop rock\, soul\, R&B\, blues\, roots rock\, gospel\, funk\, and country – all of which can be heard on Trouble and Strife\, along with the Western side of C&W and a touch of glam and disco. “For a lot of the record\, we were going for a ‘70s AM radio vibe\,” says Osborne. As for the lyrics\, the songs “are the most political I’ve ever written\,” she conveys of her first album of originals since 2014’s confessional Love and Hate. Osborne also produced Trouble and Strife\, primarily recorded in her basement studio in Brooklyn and released on the label she founded in 1991\, Womanly Hips. \nTackling serious subject matter in her writing while crafting music to “uplift\,” Osborne assembled “a great live band” (including several musicians who played on her acclaimed last album\, Songs of Bob Dylan): guitarists Jack Petruzzelli\, Nels Cline\, and Andrew Carillo\, keyboardist Keith Cotton\, bassist Richard Hammond and drummer Aaron Comess. For vocal harmonies\, she enlisted exquisite vocalists Catherine Russell\, Ada Dyer\, Martha Redbone and Audrey Martells\, whom she’s “had the great privilege to work with over many years.” The result is a Trojan horse of a record – music that is energizing\, melodic\, and hummable\, with lyrics that call out the corrupt\, the despicable and the destructive. \nRoots-rockin’ opener “Take It Any Way I Can Get It” inspires with the mandate “I’m still survivin’/I got to be dancin’”\, propelled by a joyous gospel-tinged vocal attack backed by Wurlitzer and Southern-style intertwined guitars that dare you to sit still. She co-wrote the funky “Never Get Tired (of Loving You)” with Richard Hammond and her partner Keith Cotton\, propelled by Cotton’s Prophet 6 synth\, for her teenaged daughter: a message of stability in an uncertain world. “That song has a serious subtext\,” says Osborne\, but its “cool\, retro flavor hopefully makes it a joyful thing.” The gorgeous ballad “Whole Wide World” finds Osborne hitting impossibly high notes\, its sound inspired by the Chi-Lites; its message “is about hanging on to hope and envisioning something better for the future.” Another early ‘70’s sound infuses the super-catchy “Boy Dontcha Know”: Osborne’s purring vocals are surrounded by a Spiders from Mars-era piano and Big Star-esque Mando-guitar; its singalong lyrics look at gender nonconformity and the obstacles one faces when born female. \nAbuse of power is the subject of two of the angriest songs on Trouble and Strife\, with their infectious sound imbuing the songs a la a wolf in sheep’s clothing: the bluesy stomp “Hands Off\,” punctuated by distinctive guitar riffs\, denounces corrupt exploiters of people and the planet. “That Was A Lie\,” with scornful lyrics buffeted by buoyant pop rock\, castigates “those camera-ready mouthpieces for corrupt officials\,” according to Osborne. \nTexan Ana Maria Rea\, whose family emigrated to America when she was a child\, contributed spoken passages in her native tongue to the rhythmic “What’s That You Say.” “She tells the story of her family coming from Mexico City\, where her father had been kidnapped\, to the U.S. and how difficult that was\,” says Osborne. “Her message is ‘I’m not afraid\,’ and her mission is to help other people who are in the same position she was in. Ana Maria is a shining light of a person.” \nEscape from a place where “there’s nothin’ left alive” drives Osborne to “Panama\,” a showcase of her vocal range expressing gut-punch lyrics reminiscent of Dylan at his most vitriolic. But it is the Western-flavored title track that Osborne points to as the song most inspired by her “Dylanology” concerts that began in 2016 and led to her 2018 covers album\, “If you spend that intensive time living with his songs\, I think it just rubs off on you\,” Osborne admits. “’Trouble and Strife’ betrays the Dylan influence the most because of the odd characters coming in and out of these absurd situations (much like the ones we find ourselves in today).” \nOsborne’s years of experience as a seasoned road warrior are reflected throughout Trouble and Strife\, the album. Her tenure with what she calls a “meat and potatoes rock ‘n roll band”\, Trigger Hippy\, shows up in “Meat and Potatoes\,” a farewell collaboration with her former bandmates\, cut in a Nashville studio: Written with Trigger Hippy bassist Nick Govrik\, it features that group’s Southern-boogie groove. It’s a feel-good song extolling the virtue of downhome cookin’ – and lovin’. “ \nIt’s been quite the journey since the woman AllMusic.com declared “the most gifted vocalist of her generation” moved from small-town Kentucky to attend NYU film school in the 1980s. Osborne’s astounding voice drew attention when she joined the fun at open mic nights in downtown clubs\, which eventually led to 1995’s Relish\, “that rare breed of album where critical consensus\, popular approval and enduring appeal unite\,” according to American Songwriter. Since then\, she’s performed with Motown’s revered rhythm section the Funk Brothers and toured with the Dead (where she first met and sang with Dylan). She’s harmonized with Stevie Wonder at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, duetted with Luciano Pavarotti\, and co-headlined a tour with the legendary Mavis Staples. She has amassed a loyal fan base as she’s continuously traveled the country. It’s a rhythmically complex neo-classical meditation\, both “harmonically jazzy\,” but with a finger-snapping hip-hop pulse. “The Loop” takes a drumbeat from touring drummer Omari Williams (looped\, of course) recorded in mono directly to Boney’s iPhone and\, yes\, detours into a winding\, twangy Wes Montgomery-esque blues guitar solo that gently waxes and wanes like a rolling tidal wave. “It’s pretty wild\,” says Boney. At a very early age\, Joanie was exposed to the finest Irish traditional music listening to her father and his friends play music at family gatherings and social events. She began taking lessons from legendary flutist and National Heritage Award winner Jack Coen\, and within a few short years\, she had achieved great success winning the world championship in Irish music on both the concert flute and tin whistle. During that time\, Joanie also became the first American to win the coveted Senior All- Ireland Championship on the whistle. \nMadden has sold over 500\,000 solo albums and has performed on over 200 recordings\, including three Grammy-winning albums running the gamut from Pete Seeger and Sinead O’Connor to the Boston Pops. Throughout her musical career\, she has amassed a plethora of awards and citations. Her merits include being the youngest member inducted into both the Irish-American Musicians Hall of Fame and the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Hall of Fame\, she was chosen for the Wild Geese award\, where she joined an impressive list of previous honorees\, including: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt\, Tony award winning playwright Brian Friel\, Nobel prize laureate Seamus Heaney and Irish dance sensation\, Michael Flatley. In 2016\, Irish America Magazine named Joanie as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Irish Women in the world. \nMARY COOGAN was born in New York and raised in a musical household. She is a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. Her mother came from Castlerea in County Roscommon and her father Jim was a great accordion player whose parents emigrated from County Waterford. Her father passed down his love of Irish music to Mary and she became a self-taught guitar\, mandolin and bouzouki player. In addition to her outstanding musical talents\, Mary also holds her masters degree in education and was named in Who’s Who among American Teachers. She has a number of recordings including a beautiful solo album entitled; “Christmas” and also one with her father called “Passing Time”\, but her close ties to children pushed her to make a wonderful collection of music with her great friend Kathy Ludlowe for our young fans entitled\, “The Big Ship Sails.” She continues to teach music to children in New York and is a highly sought-after accompanist. Acoustic Guitar Magazine named Mary one of the top four Celtic guitarists in Celtic music. \nMIRELLA MURRAY grew up in Claddaghduff on the northwest coast of Connemara in County Galway. Her father John Joe\, a notable sean nós dancer\, came from Inishark Island and had a deep understanding and love for traditional music. Mirella studied the piano accordion with Mary Finn and it was at music classes that she met up with fiddler Liz Kane from Letterfrack. Mirella won the accordion All-Ireland championship and duet All-Ireland championship with Liz Kane. \nMirella teamed up with the great fiddle player Tola Custy from Co. Clare and they recorded\, “Three Sunsets”\, which was voted one of the top five albums of the year by The Irish Times Newspaper. Mirella performed at the International Women’s Day Festival in Moscow; was featured in the Galway Arts Festival and toured Austria\, Scandinavia\, Switzerland\, Spain\, and France. She was a featured soloist in the off-Broadway production of the late Johnny Cunningham’s theatrical production\, “Peter & Wendy”\, an adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan” which garnished two OBIE Awards. \nMirella also has an incredible flair for teaching\, and it is a credit to her musicianship that twenty-two of her pupils have gained All-Ireland titles. She has accumulated a vast store of tunes from her travels\, and musicians such as Sharon Shannon\, Lunasa and the Bumblebees credit her as a source for many uncommon melodies. \nKATHLEEN BOYLE from Glasgow\, Scotland comes from a family steeped in the traditional music of Donegal. Her father Hughie is a talented musician and handed down his love of music to her. Kathleen is a talented pianist and accordion player and has won All-Scotland and All-Britain titles on both instruments. \nIn 1999\, Kathleen made history as the first graduate to gain a degree in traditional music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She is in great demand as a teacher and lecturer on both accordion and piano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama\, the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music and The Irish Academy of World Music in Limerick University. \nShe has performed at Holyrood Palace for His Royal Highness Prince Charles and for Irish President Mary McAleese; Kathleen’s travels with Cherish the Ladies and Dochas have taken her around the world with tours of the UK\, Spain\, France\, Ireland\, Italy\, Denmark\, Austria\, Germany\, Sweden\, America\, Canada and China. Dochas was voted best newcomers at the 2004 Scots Traditional Music Awards and nominated as best folk band in 2006. Kathleen’s first solo album “An Cailin Rua” or “The Red Haired Girl” was released to rave reviews in 2008. Her latest recording\, “Back to Donegal”\, is an album she recorded with her father and family members. \nNOLLAIG CASEY is one of Ireland’s most gifted musicians\, with her own unique way of playing traditional Irish music on the fiddle and has such a distinctive sound that it would be impossible to mistake it for that of anyone else. This “sound” is so attractive to other musicians that there exists hardly any major Irish artist of the last thirty years with whom she has not worked – and many international artists have been equally entranced. \nA graduate from University College Cork with a Bachelors in Music Degree at the exceptionally early age of nineteen\, she embarked upon a professional career first joining the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra where she remained for three years until she joined the ground breaking Irish band\, Planxty. \nIn addition to her work with Cherish the Ladies\, Nollaig has recorded and worked with Enya\, Van Morrison\, Sinéad O’Connor\, Nanci Griffith\, Ricky Skaggs\, Rod Stewart\, Dónal Lunny\, Mary Black\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, Carlos Nuñez\, Jim Rooney\, Andy Irvine\, Moving Hearts\, The Indigo Girls\, Spandau Ballet\, Christy Moore\, Liam O’Flynn\, Dan ar Bras\, Sharon Shannon\, Maura O’Connell\, Dick Gaughan\, Paddy Keenan\, Máirtín O’Connor. He hails from Galway City and the clarity and richness of his voice and the emotion with which he delivers his songs\, has been compared with the best ballad singers that Ireland has ever produced. Don’s award winning debut solo album “Start of a Dream” was released in 2006 to critical acclaim and his version of Richard Thompsons classic song\, “Dimming of the Day” won vocal cut of the year from the 2010 Live Ireland awards. His passionate singing and majestic voice guarantees a most impressive performance in front of a live audience as those who have seen him perform in Ireland\, Europe and the USA can attest to. 2011 was a year to remember for Don\, as he was one of the finalists in one of Ireland most watched TV programs\, The All Ireland Talent Show. His continued popularity and support from viewers provided him with many weeks of performing to live audiences of up to 800\,000 tuning in weekly. Irish American super group; Cherish The Ladies invited Don to join them on their summer tour of Ireland and Scotland and also further touring consisting of 18 States in America as part of their Christmas Tour. The band’s leader Joanie Madden introduces Stiffe as\, “One of the greatest singers Ireland has ever produced”. In December 2011 Don released his second album “Lifes Journey” and one of Don’s own songs from that album\, Somebody Special\, was recently awarded Song of the Year from the Live Ireland Awards. Noted artists; Sean Keane\, Cherish the Ladies\, Kate Purcell and Matt Keane\, have also showed their respect for Don’s prowess as a songwriter and have covered his self-penned songs. \nDANCERS \nJASON OREMUS has been heavily involved in Irish dancing and the dance industry his entire life. Originally from Sydney\, Australia\, he won 5 consecutive State and National Solo Irish dancing titles from 1999-2003. Jason performed in the Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony alongside Tap Dogs in 2000 at just 15 years of age. \nIn early 2004\, Jason joined the international dance phenomenon “Riverdance”. After a short period of time\, he was invited to take over as the lead and to star as the principle male dancer. His travels as the principal dancer took him all around the globe where he performed to standing only crowds in over 30 countries. Jason has recently been developing a new concept of Irish dance that attempts to break the barriers and traditional restraints that have been placed on this engaging art form. \nGARRETT COLEMAN As a native of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, Garrett was trained in traditional Irish step dance at the Burke School under the tutelage of the internationally renowned Theresa Burke. Despite his traditional background\, Garrett has consistently found himself drawn to rhythmically innovative types of movement that push the boundaries of athleticism through dance. In addition to Irish Step\, he has trained in hip hop\, tap\, and contemporary movement. \nCompetitively\, Garrett was named the two-time World Champion (2004\, 2005) and All Ireland Champion (2004). He is also a nine-time Mid-American Champion and has held the North American title six times. In 2006\, he was a silver medalist and scholarship winner with the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts\, and was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. In June of 2006\, he met President Bush at a ceremony in Washington\, D.C. and performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Garrett has toured professionally with Riverdance and Trinity Irish Dance Company and has performed with various other groups\, including Cherish the Ladies\, The Chieftians\, Eileen Ivers\, Gaelic Storm\, Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony\, David Dorfman of NYC\, and Pittsburgh’s Attack Theatre. \nJULIE FITZGERALD is an accomplished fiddle player and step dancer from Bancroft\, Ontario. She is a 2- Time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion\, as well as 2-Time Open Step Dance Champion. Since her early days of old-time fiddle\, she has diversified and become an accomplished fiddle player of many styles. She is a member of the family group “Everything Fitz: The Fitzgerald Family.” \nJulie has been in high demand for both her fiddling and dancing as a performer in various groups across North America. In addition to touring with Cherish the Ladies\, she has had the opportunity to perform internationally with many of her lifelong musical ‘idols’ including Leahy\, Natalie MacMaster\, Stepcrew\, Bowfire\, Troy MacGillivray\, Sharon Shannon\, We Banjo 3\, Carlos Nunez\, Solas and Eileen Ivers. \nJulie recently graduated from Humber College in Toronto from their Bachelor of Music program. Julie’s love of passing on the Canadian traditional music and dance led to the creation of an instructional step  dance DVD. Whenever she is taking a break from touring\, Julie teaches private dance and fiddle lessons to students at home and at music festivals.
