SUMMARY:Burton Cummings of The Guess Who
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall and Soul of Buffalo present\nBurton Cummings\nof ‘The Guess Who:’ 60th Anniversary Hits Tour\nwith special guest The Vincent James Explosion\nThursday\, March 6｜7 PM \nBurton Cummings transcends time\, genres\, and generations with a body of work that continues to resonate with fans old and new. His voice has been rated among the finest in rock music. He continues at the top of his game as performer\, singer\, songwriter\, and recording artist. \nTickets start at just $49.50 with limited Meet & Greet and Tour Package experiences available! \n \nPark and ride from D’Youville University (260 Connecticut St.) for this event. The lot is less than a quarter of a mile away from the hall and the shuttle provides a quick and easy way to get to the hall without walking. Parking and shuttle service are free of charge for patrons. Shuttle service begins at 6PM and ends 30 minutes after the conclusion of the concert. \nPlease note the venue is unable to accept Canadian currency for this event. \nAbout Burton Cummings\nAs lead singer and songwriter for Canada’s original rock ‘n’ roll superstars\, The Guess Who\, Burton scored an unprecedented string of international hit singles and albums including “American Woman\,” “These Eyes\,” “Laughing\,” “No Time\,” “Share the Land\,” “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature\,” and others\, all written or co-written by Burton. By 1970\, The Guess Who had sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry before breaking up in 1975. \nThe group achieved a long list of firsts\, including first Canadian group to reach #1 on the Billboard charts – holding that spot for three weeks – and first to earn a platinum album for U.S. sales of more than one million copies. Rolling Stone magazine hailed The Guess Who as “one of rock’s most consistently fascinating maverick bands” with a succession of songs “that has few equals among contemporary North American groups.” Dick Clark described the group as rock innovators and ambassadors of Canadian music. \nWith a Winnipeg Community Centre and Performing Arts Centre named in his honor\, Burton is a candidate for Canada’s most beloved rock ‘n’ roll son\, yet he also enjoys a level of world-wide stature shared by only a handful of other Canadian artists. \nThe vast Guess Who catalogue endures today with staples of classic rock and oldies radio as well as in feature films\, including: American Beauty\, Almost Famous\, Cable Guy\, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me\, and Jackie Brown. “When I think back on having five million-selling records in the Top 10\, one after the other\, I can hardly believe it\,” says Burton\, “I was just twenty years old. The scope and magnitude of our success escaped all of us. It really didn’t sink in until years later.” \nBeginning his solo career in 1976\, Burton continued his winning streak with a gold record for his solo debut single “Stand Tall\,” produced by legendary hitmaker Richard Perry\, who numbered among his clients Barbra Streisand\, Carly Simon and Ringo Starr. He followed this with more than a dozen hit singles and albums including “I’m Scared\,” “My Own Way to Rock\,” “I Will Play a Rhapsody\,” “Timeless Love\,” and “You Saved My Soul.” Sold-out tours across Canada and the United States solidified Burton’s stature as a top entertainer. Burton’s 1978 album Dream of a Child became the first quadruple platinum-selling album by a Canadian artist. \nThrough the 1980s and ‘90s\, Burton continued to tour and joined Beatles drummer Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. The success of Lenny Kravitz’ cover of “American Woman” in the hit feature film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me brought renewed attention to the original Guess Who. The group reunited in 1999 for the closing ceremonies of the Pan-American Games with a television audience numbering in the tens of millions. Several high-profile North American tours followed. \nAs the voice of all of the classic Guess Who hit songs\, Burton has toured with his long-time band for the past twenty plus years across North America\, as well as joining Randy Bachman onstage as Bachman-Cummings\, performing the songs from the original The Guess Who\, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Burton’s solo career. \nAbout the Vincent James Explosion\nThe Vincent James Explosion is a high powered fusion of Rock\, Blues & Jazz\, formed in 2005 by guitarist and composer Vincent James Mastrantonio.  Based out of Buffalo\, NY. they have released four all original albums.  They have performed on many festival stages and have also been direct support for many iconic artists\, including The Alex Skolnick Trio\, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express\, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush\, Jeff Lorber Fusion and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra playing Led Zepplin. \nThe current lineup features Vincent on guitar and vocals\, Jerry Sampson on bass and vocals and Jim Lisner on drums. \n

SUMMARY:Over the Rainbow: Celebrating the 120th Birthday of Harold Arlen
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, February 16\, 2025\, at Kleinhans Music Hall as we pay tribute to one of Buffalo’s most legendary musical icons\, Harold Arlen\, the composer behind some of the greatest songs in the Great American Songbook. A visionary whose work includes the iconic “Over the Rainbow\,” Arlen’s compositions have shaped American music for generations. This special event is being produced through a collaborative effort by JazzBuffalo and Kleinhans Music Hall and honors Arlen’s immense contributions to jazz and popular music. \nThe event will be headlined by Pete Malinverni\, a native of the Western New York region and an acclaimed jazz pianist\, composer\, arranger\, and educator based in New York City\, along with internationally renowned violinist Julie Kurtzman and rising star jazz vocalist Anaïs Reno. Together\, they will bring Arlen’s music to life with historical stories\, fresh arrangements\, and heartfelt interpretations of his timeless songs. \nPete Malinverni\, Julie Kurtzman\, and Anaïs Reno (Photo Credits: JazzBuffalo Contributor\, Jack Zuff) \nHarold Arlen’s musical legacy is rich with classics like “Stormy Weather\,” “Come Rain or Come Shine\,” and “Get Happy\,” but perhaps none is as famous as “Over the Rainbow\,” written for The Wizard of Oz. This song\, often hailed as the greatest of the 20th century\, earned Arlen an Academy Award and cemented his place in American music history. \nThough Arlen’s extraordinary talent was born and nurtured in Buffalo\, his recognition in his hometown remains sparse. This event aims to celebrate his life and work in the very city where his remarkable journey began. Arlen’s Buffalo roots fundamentally shaped his legendary career\, from playing piano on the S.S. Canadiana to becoming a major figure on Broadway and Hollywood. \nMark your calendars for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration of Harold Arlen’s 120th birthday! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserved seating for this special event\, honoring one of Buffalo’s finest musical sons\, is now on sale! Don’t miss this chance to experience the magic of Arlen’s music in the historic Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information about Harold Arlen’s incredible legacy\, visit the online exhibition curated by Chana Revell Kotzin at jewishbuffalohistory.org/arlen. \nFor an insightful article about Harold Arlen’s Buffalo legacy\, read the article by Ed Healy\, former Vice President of Marketing at Visit Buffalo Niagara\, at https://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/harold-arlen-buffalos-great-american-songwriter/ \nBe part of this extraordinary event where Buffalo honors one of its most treasured musical talents.

SUMMARY:Will Downing
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall & Soul of Buffalo Present:\nWill Downing\nwith Special Guest\, Buffalo NY’s own\nWILL HOLTON\nThursday\, November 14\, 2024\nKleinhans Music Hall\nDoors at 6:30PM / Show at 8PM\nAll Ages / Reserved Seating\nWill Downing will appear with his full band (not the BPO)\n\nCelebrating an insane 35 years in the “bizness” and with 27 records to his credit\, Grammy-nominated R&B | Smooth Jazz singer Will Downing will not be stopped! Flexing on his international appeal\, lead single “What Part of My Love” from his new record Soul Rising shot to the top of the UK Soul Chart Top 30 and parked there. With recordings for Island\, Mercury\, Verve\, Motown\, Sophisticated Soul\, and Shanachie Records\, Downing is an industry veteran whose silky baritone has been compared to Luther Vandross and Brian McKnight. \nAbout Will Downing \nCareer highlights include the #1 R&B chart-topping album After Tonight (2007) and Classique (2009)\, which peaked at #22 on the Billboard 100. Downing’s collaborators include a Who’s Who of R&B | Soul | Jazz headliners: Jennifer Holliday\, Kool & the Gang\, Gerald Albright\, Billy Ocean\, Regina Belle\, and Maysa\, among others. \nWill Downing was born and raised in a working-class family in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn. His father was a skycap at a local airport and his mother was a schoolteacher. As a teen\, Downing was a member of a school choir. At age 16\, he sang publishing house demos for songwriters who couldn’t sing well\, earning $50 each. \nIn 1988\, he signed a recording contract with 4th & B’way Records and released his first solo album Will Downing. It included a cover version of the John Coltrane classic\, “A Love Supreme\,” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs record chart. Downing switched to Island Records for his second release\, Come Together as One (1989). \nDowning moved to Mercury Records for his fourth outing\, Love’s the Place to Be (1993). All the Man You Need\, released on Motown Records\, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Album in 2000. It included “When You Need Me\,” a duet with Chante Moore. In 2002\, Downing received the International Association of African-American Music Diamond Award. \nIn 2023\, Will suffered a soul-crushing loss\, with the unexpected passing of his daughter Aron Siobhan Downing in January. As a father\, he was devastated…heartbroken. As an artist\, he sought solace and comfort through his craft\, facing the hurt head-on\, exploring multiple themes of love to begin healing. Persevering through the pain\, Downing’s soul is rising…literally! The Prince of Sophisticated Soul is proud to share his 7- song masterclass of triumph over tragedy\, Soul Rising! Although not a “concept” album\, the pieces of Soul Rising fit together beautifully as a single statement in honor and celebration of his eternal love for Siobhan.

SUMMARY:Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall and Emporium Presents present\nDr. Neil deGrasse Tyson\nThe Cosmic Perspective\n*Sold Out*\nThere is no view of the world as emotionally potent as the one granted by a cosmic perspective. It’s one that sees Earth as a planet in a vast empty universe. It profoundly influences what we think and feel about science\, culture\, politics\, and life itself. \nTickets start at only $39.95 and are on sale now! A limited number of VIP Q&A tickets will also be available which includes premium seating and a post-show question and answer session with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. \nAbout Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson\nDr. Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. \n\n\n\nIn 2001\, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation\, space exploration\, and national security. \nIn 2004\, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy\, dubbed the “Moon\, Mars\, and Beyond” commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006\, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council\, which guides NASA through its perennial need to fit ambitious visions into restricted budgets. \n\nNeil deGrasse Tyson by Patrick Queen for Columbia Magazine \nIn addition to dozens of professional publications\, Dr. Tyson has written\, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005\, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson’s fifteen books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution\, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS NOVA four-part mini-series Origins\, in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered in September 2004. \nTwo of Tyson’s other books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries\, which was a New York Times bestseller\, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet\, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS NOVA documentary The Pluto Files\, based on the book\, premiered in March 2010. \nIn February 2012\, Tyson released his tenth book\, containing every thought he has ever had on the past\, present\, and future of space exploration: Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier. \nFor five seasons\, beginning in the fall of 2006\, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW\, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe. \nDuring the summer of 2009 Tyson identified a cadre of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular Podcast\, for three years it enjoyed a limited-run Television Series on the National Geographic Channel. StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would\, or could\, like science. In its first year on television and in three successive seasons\, it was nominated for a Best Informational Programming Emmy. \nTyson is the recipient of twenty-three honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid “13123 Tyson.” And by zoologists\, with the naming of Indirani Tysoni\, a native species of leaping frog in India. On the lighter side\, Tyson was voted “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive” by People Magazine in 2000. \nIn 2017\, Tyson published Astrophysics for People In A Hurry\, which was a domestic and international bestseller. This adorably readable book is an introduction to all that you’ve read and heard about that’s making news in the universe—consummated\, in one place\, succinctly presented\, for people in a hurry. \nThat was followed in 2018 by Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military\, coauthored with Avis Lang\, in 2019 by Letters from an Astrophysicist\, both New York Times Bestsellers\, and in 2021 by Cosmic Queries: StarTalk’s Guide to Who We Are\, How We Got Here\, and Where We are Going\, coauthored with James Trefil. \nTyson served as Executive Science Editor and on-camera Host & Narrator for Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey\, the 21stcentury continuation of Carl Sagan’s landmark television series. The show began in March 2014 and ran thirteen episodes in primetime on the FOX network\, and appeared in 181 countries in 45 languages around the world on the National Geographic Channels. Cosmos won four Emmy Awards\, a Peabody Award\, two Critics Choice awards\, as well as a dozen other industry recognitions. Tyson reprised his role as on-camera host for the next season of Cosmos—Cosmos: Possible Worlds\, which premiered on the National Geographic Channel in March 2020 and on the FOX network in September 2020. \nTyson’s latest books are Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization and To Infinity and Beyond: A Journey of Cosmic Discovery\, coauthored with Lindsey Nyx Walker\, both New York Times bestsellers. \nTyson is the fifth head of the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the first occupant of its Frederick P. Rose Directorship. He is also a research associate of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. \nNeil deGrasse Tyson lives in New York City with his wife\, a former IT project manager with Bloomberg Financial Markets. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Haley Reinhart
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall & Soul of Buffalo present: \nHaley Reinhart\nOff The Ground Tour\n\nwith Cami Clune \nA timeless voice outlasts eras. It feels just as home in the sixties as the TikTok age. Haley Reinhart brandishes such a voice. The expansive scope of her range comes into full focus on her 5th solo release\, Off The Ground. \nIn many ways\, Haley began working towards the album and her artistry as a child. Mom and dad share a “Midnight Band\,” and unsurprisingly\, their daughter would sing before she could talk. She spent countless hours engaged in rhyming games with her mom or locked into a call-and-response as a baby with her father. \nOpening the evening is Cami Clune\, a singer/songwriter from Buffalo\, NY. Incorporating elements from pop\, rock\, and country\, her sound is a unique fusion of genres. She first captured national attention as a semi-finalist on Season 19 of NBC’s The Voice. In her blind audition\, she received a 4 chair turn with a block\, the only contestant her season with those combined accolades. She chose John Legend as her coach\, but ultimately landed a spot on Kelly Clarkson’s team\, as she used her only steal for Cami in the knockout round. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Haley Reinhart\nIn 2009\, Haley was the first songstress to join her high school jazz band to perform at both the Montreux and Umbria jazz festivals. Her fascination with all things classic continued as she became a fan of The Beatles\, Janis Joplin\, Ella Fitzgerald and Sly & The Family Stone. These influences led her to record at Sunset Sound\, paying homage to classic rock and pop hits from the late sixties titled. Haley performs regularly with Robby Krieger of The Doors among other rock legends. \nThe double platinum-certified Chicago-born/Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter exudes an empowering level of charisma and confidence earned by a quiet\, decade-long grind. Haley landed third place and became a fan favorite on season 10 of American Idol. She recently returned to AI\, this time as a mentor\, coaching contestants in the Soul Genre. \nHer dynamic presence has powered four previous solo albums— Listen Up! [2012] Interscope\, Better [2016] Red Dot\, What’s That Sound? [2017] Concord\, and Lo- Fi Soul [2019] on her own label. Haley has been known to leave her mark on countless films and commercials\, singing in the new Mazda ad\, for Chase Bank\, as well as on TV shows including Love Island\, Gossip Girl\, Nashville\, Riverdale\, The Wilds\, America’s Got Talent\, Dancing with the Stars\, and more. \nMeanwhile\, her take on the Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love” generated a remarkable 325 million Spotify streams and 100 million YouTube views within a few years of its release. What started off as a session sung for an Extra gum commercial turned out to be a chart-topping-radio hit and touring sensation by serendipity. Haley’s remake peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and No. 31 on the Billboard Adult Pop Airplay chart. \n \nHaley has also collaborated regularly with other talented musicians. She’s featured on Postmodern Jukebox’s highest-viewed videos on YouTube (over 300 million views) and has dueted with movie star Jeff Goldblum on two tracks from his chart-topping jazz standards collection\, The Capitol Studios Sessions. Haley joined Jeff for an unforgettable performance on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! In 2019\, she continued pushing boundaries by lending her voice and songwriting skills to Vicetone’s EDM dance hit “Something Strange\,” as well as an EDM version of Radiohead’s “Creep” with DJ Naeleck in 2022. \nExpanding her oeuvre\, Haley voices a young boy named Bill Murphy on the Netflix hit animated series based on comedian Bill Burr’s childhood – F Is For Family (seasons one through five out now)\, and made her acting debut in the #1 hit Robert Rodriguez Netflix film We Can Be Heroes\, where she played a superhero whose voice is her power. \nBoth 2022 and 2023 were banner years. In September 2022\, her newest EP\, Off The Ground\, released worldwide. The extended play features seven original songs all either written or co-written by Haley. From Fall 2022 to Fall 2023\, she headlined the “Off The Ground Tour” and played to rave reviews in over 100 theaters and rock rooms throughout North America. \nIn 2024\, Haley has taken her career to another level. After spending the first half of the year writing and recording a new album\, Haley will embark on another leg of the “Off The Ground” headline tour\, which will run from May to November 2024\, with a stop in Buffalo NY. The show is just beginning. \nLIMITED VIP MEET & GREET TICKET AVAILABLE! \nJoin Haley Reinhart for a memorable Meet & Greet experience prior to the performance at Kleinhans Musica Hall! The experience includes a photo with Haley\, who will also sign up to two items per ticket holder\, plus your choice from among the best seats in the house. Participants will also have early access to bars and the merch table. This opportunity is limited to 50 participants. Specific instructions will be sent in the days leading up to the show. \nAbout Cami Clune \nCami has performed as a featured vocalist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and has sung the national anthem for various organizations\, including the NFL and NHL. Her versatility extends beyond music as well; she has lent her voice to jingles\, showcased her acting skills in short films and commercials\, and took the stage in various musical productions throughout her life. Most notably\, she took on the lead role in the powerful short film “Blink of an Eye\,” shedding light on the pressing issue of opioid abuse\, while also contributing her vocal talents to the title track. \nSince her run on The Voice\, Cami has been diligently honing in on her craft\, focusing on writing and recording her own original music. She is so excited to share what she has been working on with the world. This past year\, she ventured into new musical territory by forming “Cami and The Fringe\,” a band that has not only sparked her creativity but also facilitated her artistic growth. Cami’s single “Rewind” is to be released June 14th. She cannot wait for you to hear this song\, as she feels that it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her musical journey.

SUMMARY:Boney James
DESCRIPTION:KLEINHANS MUSIC HALL and SOUL OF BUFFALO present:\nBONEY JAMES\nSmooth Jazz/R&B Sax Master\nSUNDAY MARCH 17\, 2024 | 7pm\nDoors at 5:30pm\n\nDetour\, on Concord Records\, is chart-topping jazz/R&B sax player Boney James’ 18th studio album. Appropriately titled\, this latest album is a subtle stylistic turn that builds on the commercial success of 2020’s Solid\, his highest charting release ever on the pop charts\, peaking in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. \n“The urge to write again came from the joy of being back on the road\, performing in front of live audiences\,” explains Boney. “I had shut down creatively when the pandemic hit. It was the disruptive and disorienting detour we all took when the world locked down\, and that’s reflected in the more experimental directions some of the new music takes. The thing about a detour\, you may take a different route\, but you still get to your destination.” \nLike Solid\, Detour provides a welcome respite from an increasingly foreboding world filled with political strife. It’s a trip through James’ distinctive contemporary jazz/R&B landscapes\, layered in quicksilver watercolor images and cinematic set pieces. Detour represents the next extension of Boney James’ trademark blend of genres which includes blues\, soul\, roots\, classical\, art-pop and hip-hop. \n“There are some people who think I’m a legend\,” laughs Boney about his status as one of the best-kept secrets in music. “And others who have never heard of me. It’s kind of a nice place to live and play in. I do sense a great deal of positive energy towards the music I’ve been making recently and for that\, I’m tremendously grateful.” \n“Coastin’” featuring Lalah Hathaway\, a breezy ride through Malibu on the Pacific Coast Highway\, will be the first single at Urban Adult Contemporary radio. “I am so thrilled to finally have the opportunity to collaborate with Lalah\,” says Boney. “I am a huge fan and it was a complete joy to co-write this song and have her come over and sing this amazing performance.” \nJames’ new album gets underway with the title track\, a winding\, playful duet between sax and piano evoking a breezy\, leisurely drive on an open road\, that features some of Boney’s most adventurous playing.  “I close my eyes and listen\,” he says about choosing a name for a particular cut\, and “Detour” fits this one perfectly. “The title is my trying to poetically convey what I feel when I listen to the music.” \nThere are also “detours” along the way for a steamy\, sweaty summer day in a bluesy “Memphis\,” a shimmering glimpse of the aurora borealis via Boney’s chill-inducing soprano sax solo (“Northern Lights”) and even the fleeting present moment in the heartbeat which opens the closing “Blur\,” a wistful lullaby that still manages to point us to the future. \n“Bring It Back\,” the first Contemporary Jazz radio focus track\, features a patented warm Boney melody\, highlighted by a spirited funky point-counterpoint between James’ rhythmic tenor sax and buzzing West Coast new jazz musician Dontae Winslow’s punchy trumpet licks. “That interplay is one of my favorite moments on the album\,” says Boney. \n“Tribute” is a eulogy to Boney’s father\, an entertainment attorney who represented him for most of his life\, who died last October. It’s a rhythmically complex neo-classical meditation\, both “harmonically jazzy\,” but with a finger-snapping hip-hop pulse. “The Loop” takes a drumbeat from touring drummer Omari Williams (looped\, of course) recorded in mono directly to Boney’s iPhone and\, yes\, detours into a winding\, twangy Wes Montgomery-esque blues guitar solo that gently waxes and wanes like a rolling tidal wave. “It’s pretty wild\,” says Boney. There’s a seductive intimacy to the sax/bass duet in “Intention\,” an idea that came from production team Anakin & Vader. \nDetour was recorded largely at Boney’s L.A. home studio in his backyard (live drums and percussion were tracked at venerable Sunset Sound)\, with both regular collaborators like former band guitarist\, now an in-demand writer/producer\, Jairus “J-Mo” Mozee (Anderson.Paak\, Nicki Minaj\, Anthony Hamilton) and hot newcomer BeatsMadeByFresh aka Christian Frazier. Among the other musicians on the album are keyboardist Tim Carmon (Eric Clapton)\, longtime drummer Omari Williams and bassist Alex Al\, renowned percussionist Lenny Castro\, and guitarists Big Mike Hart and Paul Jackson Jr. \nNicknamed by bandmates while on tour in Oslo\, Norway\, after jokingly threatening to starve himself on a threadbare per diem\, Boney or Bones or Boneman (though his wife calls him Jimmy) has put in his proverbial 10\,000 hours as a musician\, performer\, writer and producer. At age 10\, the New Rochelle\, NY native picked up the sax after 2 years on the clarinet and never looked back\, parlaying his love of R&B –Motown\, Stevie Wonder\, Earth Wind & Fire\, Curtis Mayfield and Grover Washington\, Jr. — into a musical aesthetic. He turned pro before his 20th birthday and became an in-demand touring sax and keyboard player for Morris Day\, the Isley Brothers\, Teena Marie\, Bobby Caldwell\, Randy Crawford and many others. \nIncreasingly frustrated by playing other people’s music\, Boney launched his own solo career with 1992’s Trust on the indie Spindletop Records. His subsequent 17 studio albums – including a pair of Christmas records – have been released by Warner Bros.\, Verve and Concord\, with 1995’s Seduction\, 1997’s Sweet Thing and 1999’s Body Language all RIAA certified gold. In 2015\, Boney’s futuresoul spent 11 weeks atop the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and was the best-selling Contemporary Jazz Record of 2015. \nDuring his 30-year career\, Boney has earned four Grammy nominations (“I’m not gonna lie… I’d still love a statue\,” he says)\, two NAACP Image Award nominations and a Soul Train Award\, while a dozen of his albums have landed at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart.  His collaborators in the past include a who’s who of R&B and soul: Raheem DeVaughn\, Faith Evans\, George Benson\, George Duke\, Dwele\, Al Jarreau\, Philip Bailey\, Anthony Hamilton\, Jaheim\, Eric Benét\, Dave Hollister\, Stokley Williams\, Kenny Lattimore and Angie Stone. \nFor the inimitable Boney James\, life begins at 60. The cat in the hat is back and better than ever\, enjoying life with his wife of 37 years\, actress/director Lily Mariye. \n“What drives me is my love of making music and my desire for people to hear what I’ve made\,” he says. “I still love the communal aspect of playing live. There’s nothing else like it.”

Barrie’s “Peter Pan” which garnished two OBIE Awards. \nMirella also has an incredible flair for teaching\, and it is a credit to her musicianship that twenty-two of her pupils have gained All-Ireland titles. She has accumulated a vast store of tunes from her travels\, and musicians such as Sharon Shannon\, Lunasa and the Bumblebees credit her as a source for many uncommon melodies. \nKATHLEEN BOYLE from Glasgow\, Scotland comes from a family steeped in the traditional music of Donegal. Her father Hughie is a talented musician and handed down his love of music to her. Kathleen is a talented pianist and accordion player and has won All-Scotland and All-Britain titles on both instruments. \nIn 1999\, Kathleen made history as the first graduate to gain a degree in traditional music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She is in great demand as a teacher and lecturer on both accordion and piano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama\, the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music and The Irish Academy of World Music in Limerick University. \nShe has performed at Holyrood Palace for His Royal Highness Prince Charles and for Irish President Mary McAleese; Kathleen’s travels with Cherish the Ladies and Dochas have taken her around the world with tours of the UK\, Spain\, France\, Ireland\, Italy\, Denmark\, Austria\, Germany\, Sweden\, America\, Canada and China. Dochas was voted best newcomers at the 2004 Scots Traditional Music Awards and nominated as best folk band in 2006. Kathleen’s first solo album “An Cailin Rua” or “The Red Haired Girl” was released to rave reviews in 2008. Her latest recording\, “Back to Donegal”\, is an album she recorded with her father and family members. \nNOLLAIG CASEY is one of Ireland’s most gifted musicians\, with her own unique way of playing traditional Irish music on the fiddle and has such a distinctive sound that it would be impossible to mistake it for that of anyone else. This “sound” is so attractive to other musicians that there exists hardly any major Irish artist of the last thirty years with whom she has not worked – and many international artists have been equally entranced. \nA graduate from University College Cork with a Bachelors in Music Degree at the exceptionally early age of nineteen\, she embarked upon a professional career first joining the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra where she remained for three years until she joined the ground breaking Irish band\, Planxty. \nIn addition to her work with Cherish the Ladies\, Nollaig has recorded and worked with Enya\, Van Morrison\, Sinéad O’Connor\, Nanci Griffith\, Ricky Skaggs\, Rod Stewart\, Dónal Lunny\, Mary Black\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, Carlos Nuñez\, Jim Rooney\, Andy Irvine\, Moving Hearts\, The Indigo Girls\, Spandau Ballet\, Christy Moore\, Liam O’Flynn\, Dan ar Bras\, Sharon Shannon\, Maura O’Connell\, Dick Gaughan\, Paddy Keenan\, Máirtín O’Connor. He hails from Galway City and the clarity and richness of his voice and the emotion with which he delivers his songs\, has been compared with the best ballad singers that Ireland has ever produced. Don’s award winning debut solo album “Start of a Dream” was released in 2006 to critical acclaim and his version of Richard Thompsons classic song\, “Dimming of the Day” won vocal cut of the year from the 2010 Live Ireland awards. His passionate singing and majestic voice guarantees a most impressive performance in front of a live audience as those who have seen him perform in Ireland\, Europe and the USA can attest to. 2011 was a year to remember for Don\, as he was one of the finalists in one of Ireland most watched TV programs\, The All Ireland Talent Show. His continued popularity and support from viewers provided him with many weeks of performing to live audiences of up to 800\,000 tuning in weekly. Irish American super group; Cherish The Ladies invited Don to join them on their summer tour of Ireland and Scotland and also further touring consisting of 18 States in America as part of their Christmas Tour. The band’s leader Joanie Madden introduces Stiffe as\, “One of the greatest singers Ireland has ever produced”. In December 2011 Don released his second album “Lifes Journey” and one of Don’s own songs from that album\, Somebody Special\, was recently awarded Song of the Year from the Live Ireland Awards. Noted artists; Sean Keane\, Cherish the Ladies\, Kate Purcell and Matt Keane\, have also showed their respect for Don’s prowess as a songwriter and have covered his self-penned songs. \nDANCERS \nJASON OREMUS has been heavily involved in Irish dancing and the dance industry his entire life. After a short period of time\, he was invited to take over as the lead and to star as the principle male dancer. His travels as the principal dancer took him all around the globe where he performed to standing only crowds in over 30 countries. Jason has recently been developing a new concept of Irish dance that attempts to break the barriers and traditional restraints that have been placed on this engaging art form. \nGARRETT COLEMAN As a native of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, Garrett was trained in traditional Irish step dance at the Burke School under the tutelage of the internationally renowned Theresa Burke. Despite his traditional background\, Garrett has consistently found himself drawn to rhythmically innovative types of movement that push the boundaries of athleticism through dance. In addition to Irish Step\, he has trained in hip hop\, tap\, and contemporary movement. \nCompetitively\, Garrett was named the two-time World Champion (2004\, 2005) and All Ireland Champion (2004). He is also a nine-time Mid-American Champion and has held the North American title six times. In 2006\, he was a silver medalist and scholarship winner with the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts\, and was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Choro[vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nAbout Bokyung Byun\nPraised by Classical Guitar Magazine as “confident and quite extraordinary\,” Korean guitarist\, Bokyung Byun enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after guitarists of her generation. Byun holds the distinction of being the first female winner of the prestigious JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition\, where Falletta herself described  Byun’s performance as “stunning\, showcasing her gorgeous tone\, immaculate technique\, and sophisticated musicianship.” This win is among many wherein Byun excelled in the competitive circuit\, including winning the grand prize at the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition\, known as the most prestigious guitar competition in the world. \nA bevy of orchestras\, festivals\, workshops\, and guitar societies look to Byun for solo performances and masterclasses. In recent seasons\, Byun has performed as a soloist with orchestras\, including the Buffalo Philharmonic\, the Utah Symphony\, West Los Angeles Symphony\, New Juilliard Ensemble\, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra\, among others. Her solo recital highlights include performances at the Kumho Young Artist Series\, Philadelphia Guitar Festival\, Aspen-Salida Concert Series\, Toronto Guitar Weekend\, Guitar Montréal\, Ellnora | The Guitar Festival\, and San Diego Guitar Festival. She was acclaimed for performing “eloquently through a diverse and challenging program\,” by Michelle Fratus\, president of the board of the Knoxville Guitar Society\, and having “confidence\, passion\, excellent projection and great dynamic contrast” by Heather Morand Clark\, president of the Guitar Society of Toronto. \nCommitted to expanding the role of a 21st-century musician\, Byun’s concert program often features contemporary music alongside traditional repertoire. As Byun herself says\, “it’s vital and exciting to audiences for concerts to join the new with the old. For guitar music to continue to grow\, I believe that new works must actively be cultivated in programming\, and it is my hope that audiences leave my performances with new experiences.” This skill at navigating both classic repertoire and fresh work has led her to co-found Sounding Board: The New Music Initiative for Guitarists and Composers. The project focuses on promoting collaborative relationships between composers and performers to create new works for guitar\, and its inaugural festival in Besançon\, France in 2019 has been praised as “extraordinary\, in the strict sense of the word\,” by La Presse de Gray in France. \nByun’s debut recording in 2020 has been praised by Soundboard Magazine as “a very beautiful disc. From the first notes of the “Gallarda” from Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Escarraman\, we are treated to extraordinary musicianship\, technical assurance\, and beauty of sound.” American Record Guide says “Byun’s interpretation enlivens them with creative phrasings\, articulations\, spacing\, and dynamics\, which take the listener beyond most performances I have heard.” \nBorn in Seoul\, Korea\, Byun began playing guitar at the age of six. At eleven\, she took the stage for her first solo recital\, leading to an early start in her teen years performing numerous concert tours around Korea\, to enthusiastic response\, including millions of views on YouTube. By her teen years\, she had gained national attention for first-prize finishes in three renowned competitions: the Korea Guitar Association\, the Music Association of Korea\, and the Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition. \nByun soon moved to the United States\, where she briefly studied in Los Angeles before moving to New York City\, where she entered The Juilliard School at the age of sixteen. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. She is grateful to the masterful instruction of her pedagogues\, who include Scott Tennant\, William Kanengiser\, Chen Zhi\, Tae-soo Kim\, and Sharon Isbin. \nIn 2020\, Byun co-founded Guitarlab which has provided an innovative online learning platform offering cutting-edge classes designed for young professionals around the world. New for this season\, the series will take place in the main auditorium at Kleinhans so audiences can enjoy the cushy seats\, the wonderful ambiance and reserve their seats in advance! \nPhoto by Bryan Smith \nFor extreme filmmaker Bryan Smith\, the line between going for it and going too far is often blurry—especially when you’re exploring the earth’s most remote environments. In this edge-of-your-seat presentation\, Bryan shows you what it means to adventure with purpose\, and why he believes the best expeditions are the ones with a healthy chance of failure. He’s faced machete-wielding locals in Papua New Guinea\, suffered frostbite during the first-ever ice climb of Niagara Falls\, explored the South Pacific’s deepest canyons\, and scaled North America’s tallest mountains to bring you behind the scenes and capture the impossible. \nAbout \nPhoto by Mike McKay \nBryan Smith is an award-winning filmmaker based out of Squamish\, British Columbia. His first documentary\, 49 Megawatts\, received acclaim both for its amazing kayaking footage and insightful exploration of the controversy over British Columbia’s river-based energy production. An online version went viral and led to two-feature length sea kayaking films. His work has appeared at numerous film festivals across the world\, including the prized Banff and Telluride Mountain Film Festivals. \nIn the past few years\, Smith has built on his adventure film roots and developed a strong reputation in both TV documentary and commercial cinematography. SUMMARY:Marcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nAcoustic Songs & Stories\nFeaturing\nMarcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis\nMary Seaton Room\, Kleinhans Music Hall\nTinsley Ellis and Marcia Ball are excited to present an intimate evening of their music and memories called Acoustic Songs and Stories. They will each play a set of their own songs.  Tinsley\, an elder statesman of the Blues world\, will perform many of his most popular songs from his twenty albums\, plus some delta blues and classics on his National Steel and Martin acoustic guitars.  Marcia\, a five-time Grammy nominee\, will play the piano and sing her often raucous and sometimes touching original songs full of the characters and places that shaped her.  They will weave the music together with stories from their years on stage and on the road.  Finally\, they will come together as a duo to close the night playing songs together and swapping tales of their travels and travails.  \nAbout Marcia Ball\n“Fifty years have passed in a flash\,” says pianist\, songwriter\, and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career.  Ball\, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year\, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse party every time she takes the stage. Born in Orange\, Texas and raised in Vinton\, Louisiana\, her deep Acadian heritage and a lifetime of absorbing Gulf Coast rhythm and blues is evident in her original songs and the classics she chooses to cover.  This has made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world.  With each new release\, her reputation as a profoundly soulful singer\, a boundlessly talented pianist and a courageous\, inventive songwriter continues to grow. Her love of the road has led to years of soul-satisfying performances at festivals\, concert halls and clubs. \nIn Marcia’s most recent album\, Shine Bright\, she has put together the most musically substantial\, hopeful and uplifting set of songs of her five-decade career.  Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) and recorded in Texas and Louisiana\, Shine Bright contains twelve songs (including eight originals)\, ranging from the title track’s rousing appeal for public and private acts of courage to the upbeat call to action of Pots And Pans\, a song inspired by renowned Texas political writer and humorist Molly Ivins.  From the humorous advice of Life Of The Party to the poignantly optimistic World Full Of Love\, the intensity of Ball’s conviction never wavers while\, simultaneously\, the fun never stops.  “It is a ridiculously hopeful\, cheerful record\,” she says\, in light of some of the album’s more serious subject matter.  The secret\, according to Ball “is to set the political songs to a good dance beat.” \n“A welcome ray of sunshine…Ball is a killer pianist\, a great singer and songwriter. Potent blues\, sweet zydeco\, soulful\, fast and furious Texas boogie…heartfelt\, powerful and righteous.” – Billboard \nMarcia grew up in a family whose female members all played piano and she began taking lessons at age five\, playing old Tin Pan Alley and popular music tunes from her grandmother’s collection.  But it wasn’t until she was 13 that Marcia discovered the power of soul music.  One day in 1962\, she sat amazed as Irma Thomas performed on a show at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans and delivered the most spirited and moving performance the young teenager had ever seen.  A few years later she attended Louisiana State University and after dropping out to explore the brave new hippie world of the late 1960s\, she was invited to try out for a blues-based rock band called Gum.  She made the cut and her future was set. \nIn 1970\, Ball left Baton Rouge for San Francisco.  Her car broke down in Austin\, and while waiting for repairs she fell in love with the city and decided to stay.  It wasn’t long before she was performing in local clubs with a band called Freda And The Firedogs\, a group that pioneered the Progressive Country movement\, which attracted many musicians and significant media attention to Austin.   It was around this time that she discovered Professor Longhair\, the seminal New Orleans piano player.  “Once I found out about Professor Longhair\,” recalls Ball\, “I knew I had found my direction.” \n“Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky\, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.” – The New York Times \nWhen Freda And The Firedogs broke up in 1974\, Ball launched her solo career and began touring outside of Texas and Louisiana.  She signed with Capitol Records in 1977\, debuting with the country-rock album Circuit Queen.  As she created and honed her own sound\, she released six critically acclaimed titles on the Rounder Records label during the 1980s and 1990s.  In 1990\, Ball—collaborating with Angela Strehli and Lou Ann Barton—recorded the hugely successful Dreams Come True on the Antone’s label.  At the end of 1997\, Marcia finished work on a similar “three divas of the blues” project for Rounder\, this time in the distinguished company of Tracy Nelson and her longtime inspiration\, Irma Thomas.  The CD\, Sing It!\, was released in 1998 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. \nMarcia Ball has appeared many times on national television over the years\, including the PBS special In Performance At The White House along with B.B. King and Della Reese\, Austin City Limits and HBO’s Treme.  She performed in Piano Blues\, the film directed by Clint Eastwood included in Martin Scorsese’s The Blues series which aired on PBS television nationwide in 2003.  Marcia also appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman with The New Orleans Social Club\, where she not only reached millions of people\, but also helped to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.  In 2012\, she had a role in the independent film Angels Sing starring Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.  In 2017 she performed on NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas\, live from The Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. \nBall joined Alligator Records in 2001 with the release of the critically acclaimed Presumed Innocent.  The CD won the 2002 Blues Music Award for Blues Album Of The Year.  Her follow-up\, So Many Rivers\, was nominated for a Grammy Award\, and won the 2004 Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year as well as the coveted Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year award.  Her next release\, Live! Down The Road\, released in 2005\, also garnered a Grammy nomination\, as did 2008’s Peace\, Love & BBQ (the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart).  She holds eleven Blues Music Awards\, ten Living Blues Awards\, and five Grammy Award nominations.  2010’s Grammy-nominated Roadside Attractions and 2014’s The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man successfully grew her fan base even further. \nShe has been inducted into both the Gulf Coast Music Hall Of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.  The Texas State legislature named her the official 2018 Texas State Musician.  In 2018\, Marcia was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. \n“She’s as perfect as an artist can be.” – The Houston Chronicle \nSince March of 2020 and the onset of the COVID pandemic and subsequent lock-down\, Marcia has filled her time with work on a nonprofit organization she co-founded called HOME – Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers\, which pays rent and utilities for older musicians in the Austin area.  HOMEaustin.org.  She also improved her streaming and virtual performance abilities enough to participate in many on-line fundraising efforts throughout the year.  She put her domestic skills to work making masks.  She and her husband Gordon got a dog to replace their dear Lily.  She has written songs and  she is collaborating on a musical play which she hopes becomes a real live show in the near future. \nAnd she’s getting the band ready to get back out on the road.  “I still love the feel of the wheels rolling\,” she says\, “and the energy in a room full of people ready to go wherever it is we take them.” \n  \nAbout Tinsley Ellis\n Georgia troubadour Tinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his whole life. Born in Atlanta 1957 and raised in southern Florida\, he acquired his first guitar at age seven\, inspired by seeing The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like many kids his age\, Ellis discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds\, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like the Allman Brothers Band. 20 albums (and millions of miles traveled) later on record labels such as Alligator and Capricorn\, Ellis has become an elder statesman of the blues world. \nWith his new project Tinsley Ellis – Acoustic Songs And Stories\, Ellis performs many of his most popular songs (plus delta blues and classics by artists like Gregg Allman\, Bob Dylan and Leo Kottke) on his 1937 National Steel and 1969 Martin D-35. Ellis weaves the music together with interesting and sometimes ribald stories from over 40 years of a life spent on stages and in motels and truck stops. Ellis shows no signs of slowing down and is headed your way with his newest and perhaps most unique project.
