From the iconic Over the Rainbow to Stormy Weather and Come Rain or Come Shine\, Arlen’s music has shaped American culture for generations. \n \nThis very special event\, produced in collaboration between JazzBuffalo and Kleinhans Music Hall\, honors Arlen’s immense contributions to jazz and popular music while highlighting his roots in Buffalo. Building on last year’s tremendous reception\, we are proud to make this an annual tradition for Jazz at Kleinhans—one that each year pays tribute to a true legend of American music and of Buffalo’s own history. \nHeadlining the evening will be Tierney Sutton\, a nine-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist acclaimed for her luminous voice\, imaginative interpretations\, and extraordinary storytelling. Sutton\, whose albums have earned Grammy nominations for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” year after year\, is renowned for reimagining the Great American Songbook with elegance and depth. \nShe will be joined by the extraordinary pianist Tamir Hendelman\, whose artistry has graced the stages of the Jeff Hamilton Trio\, the Grammy-winning Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, and collaborations with Barbra Streisand\, Natalie Cole\, and countless jazz luminaries. Sutton and Hendelman share a musical partnership spanning more than two decades\, touring the world together and creating unforgettable duo performances. Their synergy promises to bring Arlen’s timeless songs to life with fresh arrangements\, heartfelt interpretations\, and historical insights. \n \nThough Arlen was born and raised in Buffalo—his journey beginning with piano performances on the S.S. Canadiana before he became a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood—his legacy here remains underrecognized. This concert is not only a tribute to Arlen’s genius but also a celebration of Buffalo’s role in shaping one of America’s most treasured songwriters. \nMark your calendars and join us for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration of Harold Arlen’s 121st birthday\, presented in the intimate and historic Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall. Together\, let’s honor Buffalo’s gift to the world of music. \nFor more about Harold Arlen’s legacy\, visit the online exhibition curated by Chana Revell Kotzin at jewishbuffalohistory.org/arlen. SUMMARY:Boney James
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall and Soul of Buffalo present\nBoney James\nSlow Burn Tour\nSunday\, November 9 | 7 PM\nslow burn: noun\, informal \nA feeling that grows with a slow but deliberate intensity. \nFor saxophonist and composer Boney James\, these words perfectly describe the music he has crafted for his new Concord Records album\, Slow Burn\, to be released on October 18\, 2024. \n“When I mentioned that phrase to people as a possible title\, they said\, “That also refers to your whole career in a way” James says with a laugh. “This is my 19th record and I feel like I’m just  hitting my stride.” \nSlow Burn is a new high point in a remarkable career that now spans more than three decades  and includes a long list of accolades; four GRAMMY nominations\, three NAACP Image Award  nominations\, a Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Album and four RIAA Gold Record certifications.  In 2009\, Billboard named James one of the Top 3 Contemporary Jazz Artists of the decade. In  2024 year Boney became the first ever artist to score 20 number one singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. \nBut Boney James has never been one to look backwards and Slow Burn\, which the artist produced\, marks several firsts. Beginning with the album’s opening track\, ‘Arcadia.’ The very first notes on the album are the acoustic bass playing of the legendary Marcus Miller.  It’s one of the few times that Miller\, known for his electric bass guitar work\, has committed his  standup bass playing to a recording and the first time that James has incorporated an upright bass  into his own music \nNext is James’ intriguing interpretation of the classic ‘Butterfly.’ Co-written by master  keyboardist Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin\, the track features Marcus Miller again as well  as young lion Cory Henry’s inspired electric piano. “This beautiful melody got stuck in my head”  explains James. “I have never covered a tune by a legend like Herbie before and I hope we did  him justice.” \nThe title track\, ‘Slow Burn\,’ is one of four tunes on the album that James co-wrote and co produced with multi-instrumentalist Jairus Mozee ( known for his work with Anderson Paak\,  Anthony Hamilton and Nikki Minaj etc.). \nAnother prominent guest artist\, rising-star R&B vocalist October London\, best known for his  2023 hit The Rebirth Of Marvin is featured on the first single from the album\, ‘All I Want Is  You.’ Says James\, “It’s one of the most exciting vocal collaborations I’ve ever recorded.” \nThe funky ‘Slide’ features Boney on tenor saxophone and keyboards\, backed by all the member  of his crack touring band. “This song has a little Minneapolis feel\,” says James. “I got my start as  a professional musician touring with Morris Day\, but this is the first time I’ve copped this  groove.” \nThe Slow Burn continues with ‘A Little Romance\,’ which James calls “a very heartfelt  performance from the saxophone; it’s romantic\, hence the name.” \nBoth ‘Gonna Have a Good Time’ and ‘The Bounce’ keep the mood upbeat. Says James about the  latter\, “When I listen to it\, I start doing this little bounce. It just puts a big smile on my face.” \nThe penultimate track on Slow Burn is ‘Between the Lines\,’ followed by a grooving take on  saxophonist Stanley Turrentine’s ‘Sugar\,’ featuring longtime friend and collaborator Rick Braun  on trumpet. \n“I’ve always loved this song. It was a really fun and special way to pay homage to Stanley  Turrentine\, who was a definite influence on me\,” says James. \nSlow Burn follows two of the most successful albums of James’ career\, 2020’s Solid and 2022’s  Detour which debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart. \nJames is\, of course\, thrilled that his music continues to reach new audiences more than thirty  years after he released his debut album\, Trust\, in 1992. “It’s always been my goal to be one of  those guys that would just keep doing it at a high level\,” he says\, “and to have that connection  with the audience.” \nThat’s what it’s always been about for Boney James. Growing up in New Rochelle\, New York\,  James played clarinet in his school band\, but two years later\, he says\, “The teacher needed a sax  player. As soon as I switched\, playing it became my favorite thing to do.” \nBy the time he entered his teens\, James was already gigging with bands\, and he turned pro at 19.  After years of paying his dues with artists like The Isley Brothers\, Teena Marie and many more\,  Boney cut his first album on an independent label\, which led immediately to a major label deal  and a string of increasingly successful recordings and nonstop touring. \nNow residing in Los Angeles with wife\, director Lily Mariye\, James says\, “I wake up each day and try to play a little better. To quote the cellist Pablo  Casals ‘I think I’m making progress.’ I am really proud of my playing on this new record. And I  absolutely love the songs and the sound I achieved.” \nSome might say it has a Slow Burn: a deliberate intensity.

SUMMARY:Hot Tuna
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nHot Tuna\nwith special guest Jim Lauderdale\nFriday\, October 24 | 8 PM\nMary Seaton Room\n  \nHot Tuna\, an iconic American blues rock band\, has been delivering a profound musical experience to audiences pushing six decades. With founding members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady at its helm\, the band has constantly evolved\, continually injecting fresh energy and improvisation into their sound. \nJoining Hot Tuna on stage is special guest\, Jim Lauderdale. At any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 34 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. \nThe story of Hot Tuna begins with Jefferson Airplane\, a pioneering psychedelic rock band of the 1960s. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady were at the heart of Jefferson Airplane\, contributing to its distinctive sound and monumental success. As members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy recipients\, Kaukonen and Casady helped shape the musical landscape of the era\, leaving an indelible mark on the history of rock and roll. \nIn the late 1960s\, amidst the turbulence and creativity of the counterculture movement\, Kaukonen and Casady sought a new musical outlet. This desire led to the formation of Hot Tuna\, a band that allowed them to explore their deep-rooted passion for blues and American roots music. Hot Tuna’s early performances were characterized by a raw\, acoustic sound that highlighted Kaukonen’s intricate guitar work and Casady’s innovative bass lines. Their self-titled debut album\, released in 1970\, captured the essence of these performances and set the stage for the band’s enduring legacy. \nHot Tuna has consistently evolved throughout their career\, experimenting with different styles and sounds while staying true to their blues roots. The band’s discography\, spanning over two dozen records\, showcases their versatility and creativity. From the acoustic blues of their early years to the electric rock-infused albums of the 1970s and beyond\, Hot Tuna has continually pushed the boundaries of their music. \nCasady\, long considered one of rock’s first bass heroes\, has been a driving force behind this evolution. His creativity is evidenced by his continually evolving bass solos in his extensive library of songs and live performances. At almost 85 years of age\, Kaukonen remains at the apex of his skills\, captivating audiences with his husky voice and proficient blues licks that rival the iconic leads of many blues rock masters. Together\, they are well-seasoned musicians and musical treasures. \nHot Tuna’s live performances are legendary and known for their spontaneity and energy. The band’s ability to improvise and create unique musical moments on stage has garnered them a dedicated following. Each concert is a testament to their musicianship and deep connection with the audience. \nTo some fans\, Hot Tuna reminds them of wild and happy times. To others\, the name will forever be linked to their discovery of the power and depth of American Blues music. To newer fans\, Hot Tuna is a band on the cutting edge of music. This multifaceted appeal has allowed Hot Tuna to remain relevant and influential across generations. \nHot Tuna’s contributions to music have not gone unnoticed. It runs through March 2026. \nCash and Leventhal are currently writing the music to the theatrical production of Norma Rae.

SUMMARY:Vieux Farka Touré
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nVieux Farka Touré\nwith special guest The Paul Kozlowski Quintent\nSunday\, April 27 at 3 PM\nMary Seaton Room \nWorld-renowned musician Vieux Farka Touré is often referred to as “the Hendrix of the Sahara\,” and has become a cultural ambassador for the people of Mali and the Sahel. His 2022 collaboration with Khruangbin\, “Ali\,” pays tribute to his father (legendary guitar player Ali Farka Touré)\, receiving international acclaim. Touré’s live performances are highly energized\, dazzling crowds with his charisma and talent. \nOpening for Vieux is the Paul Kozlowski Quintet! Paul C Kozlowski is an award-winning composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and recording artist known for his genre-bending music as well as his scores for avant-garde theater productions.  Joining him onstage culled from Buffalo’s own talent pool will be Vanessa Snowden on violin\, David Phillips on cajon\, James Benders on bass\, and Nelson Rivera on woodwinds and percussion. They will be performing one set of Kozlowski’s compositions inspired by Mediterranean\, Baltic\, and North African sensibilities. \nAbout Vieux Farka Touré\nVieux was initially a drummer / calabash player at Mali’s Institut National des Arts\, but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Touré was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him\, and these recordings\, which can be heard on Vieux’s debut CD\, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Touré played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days\, at peace with\, and proud of\, his son’s talent as a musician. \nIn 2005\, Eric Herman (still Vieux’s manager today) of Modiba Productions expressed an interest in producing an album for Vieux; this led to Vieux’s self-titled debut album\, released by World Village in 2007. Ali Farka Touré’s work to tackle the problem of malaria is continued as 10% of proceeds are donated to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké through which over 3000 mosquito nets have been delivered to children and pregnant women in the Timbuktu region of Mali. On this first album\, Vieux pays homage to his father and follows Ali’s musical tradition\, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabaté\, as well as his late father. \nOn his second record\, Fondo on Six Degrees (2009)\, Vieux branched out and presented his own sound: while remaining true to the roots of his father’s music he uses elements of rock\, Latin music\, and other African influences. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim from across the globe\, and Vieux was clearly moving out of his father’s shadow. \nBy June 2010\, Vieux was performing at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. That month Vieux also released his first live album\, LIVE. His live performances are highly energized and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar\, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile\, both of which captivate audiences from all audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages). \nIn 2011 Vieux released his 3rd studio album\, The Secret\, so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son. It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno (of the Soulive trio) and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews\, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. The title track is the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father. With the heralded release of The Secret\, Vieux Farka Touré has clearly established himself as one of the world’s rare musical talents and guitar virtuosos with a distinct style that always pays homage to the past while looking towards the future. \nVieux released The Tel Aviv Session (Cumbancha) in April 2012\, a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed ‘The Touré-Raichel Collective’ that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as a masterpiece and one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music\, drawing comparisons to Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder’s legendary Talking Timbuktu album. \nIn 2013\, Vieux Farka Touré’s beautiful and critically acclaimed album Mon Pays was released as an homage to his homeland. Being that his native Mali had recently been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012\, Mon Pays was devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his native Mali. Translated as ‘My Country\,’ this predominantly acoustic undertaking transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation. Two songs on the project – ‘Future’ and ‘Peace’ feature Sidiki Diabate’s kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Touré’s spectacular guitar work. Both tracks represent an important generational “passing of the torch” as Sidiki’s father\, Toumani is considered one of the greatest living kora masters and was a close friend of Vieux’s father Ali. Mon Pays has been widely hailed as the most mature and lovely record yet from one of this generation’s most exciting artists to come out of Mali and one of world music’s true rising stars. \nVieux reunited with Idan Raichel in Paris to record\, release and subsequently tour their 2nd collaborative album as The Touré-Raichel Collective in 2014. The result was yet another musical and critical triumph\, titled ‘The Paris Session’ (Cumbancha) revered by many as not just a musical gem for the ages\, but a powerful testimonial to the power of art and fraternity to transcend vast cultural and political divides. In 2015\, Vieux released another unexpected\, genre-bending collaborative album\, this time with New York-based singer Julia Easterlin\, aptly titled ‘Touristes’. The album shot to the top of the iTunes World chart and earned critical acclaim\, including that of John Schaefer (NPR) who called it “brilliant.” On April 7\, 2017\, Vieux released his next album ‘Samba’\, recorded live in front of a small audience at Applehead Studio in Woodstock\, NY. \nWhen the COVID pandemic hit in 2020 and all touring ground to a halt\, Vieux stayed focussed on his craft at home. He worked tirelessly in the studio he built at his family’s compound (which he named ‘Studio Ali Farka Toure’ in honor of his late father) to record his debut album for World Circuit Records/BMG\, the prestigious UK-based record label with whom his father recorded and released most of his own work. The resulting album\, ‘Les Racines’ (released June 2022)\, sees Vieux masterfully return to the deep roots of the Desert Blues music that his father introduced to the world and Vieux spent most of his career to date exploring\, experimenting with\, and expanding. 2022 also saw the release of a long-awaited collaborative album between Vieux and Houston-based psych-rock superstars Khruangbin called ‘Ali’ – an album on which the artists join forces to pay homage to Ali Farka Toure by reimagining eight of his songs together.  The album was an instant hit around the globe\, immediately getting millions of streams\, enormous critical acclaim and even earning the praise of Sir Elton John who called it “one of the albums of the year – absolutely wonderful music.” With each new project Vieux broadens his horizons\, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians. \nAs a passionate champion for the people of Mali and The Sahel\, Vieux founded the charity Amahrec Sahel in 2012. As part of Amahrec Sahel’s mission to support humanitarian reconstruction and culture\, the charity has provided school supplies for children\, supported an orphanage in Bamako and provided musical instruments for young musicians in Mali. Vieux is also the director of The Ali Farka Touré Foundation\, an international organization dedicated to the preservation of Ali’s legacy and the cultural growth of Mali.

SUMMARY:Joan Osborne
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nJoan Osborne Sings the Songs of Bob Dylan\nThursday\, April 17\, 2025\nDoors at 6:30 PM｜Show at 7:30 PM\nMary Seaton Room\n“Like Bonnie Raitt\, a musician to whom she has often been compared\, Ms. Obsborne is a fiercely intelligent\, no-nonsense singer-songwriter who is allergic to traditional pop sentimentality\, though hardly devoid of feeling… She treats Mr. Dylan as fellow troubadour and roustabout\, inventing the rules while traveling along an endless road. Mr. Dylan’s songs are so deeply ingrained in the culture\, it’s a wonder more singers haven’t devoted entire concerts to his songs.” (The New York Times)\nAbout Joan Osborne\nOn her tenth studio album\, the masterful Trouble and Strife\, Joan Osborne has issued a clarion call. With stunning vocals\, a diverse range of sonics\, and incisive lyrics\, this deeply engaging collection of new original songs is her response to “the crazy\, chaotic times we’re living in\,” she says\, and “a recognition of the important role music has to play in this moment. Music has a unique ability to re-energize people and allow us to continue to hang on to that sense of joy of being alive.” \nSince she broke through 25 years ago with the multi-platinum Relish and its touchstone mega-smash “One of Us\,” the seven-time Grammy nominee has never played it safe. Osborne has followed her restless musical heart\, exploring a diverse range of genres: pop rock\, soul\, R&B\, blues\, roots rock\, gospel\, funk\, and country – all of which can be heard on Trouble and Strife\, along with the Western side of C&W and a touch of glam and disco. “For a lot of the record\, we were going for a ‘70s AM radio vibe\,” says Osborne. As for the lyrics\, the songs “are the most political I’ve ever written\,” she conveys of her first album of originals since 2014’s confessional Love and Hate. Osborne also produced Trouble and Strife\, primarily recorded in her basement studio in Brooklyn and released on the label she founded in 1991\, Womanly Hips. \nTackling serious subject matter in her writing while crafting music to “uplift\,” Osborne assembled “a great live band” (including several musicians who played on her acclaimed last album\, Songs of Bob Dylan): guitarists Jack Petruzzelli\, Nels Cline\, and Andrew Carillo\, keyboardist Keith Cotton\, bassist Richard Hammond and drummer Aaron Comess. For vocal harmonies\, she enlisted exquisite vocalists Catherine Russell\, Ada Dyer\, Martha Redbone and Audrey Martells\, whom she’s “had the great privilege to work with over many years.” The result is a Trojan horse of a record – music that is energizing\, melodic\, and hummable\, with lyrics that call out the corrupt\, the despicable and the destructive. \nRoots-rockin’ opener “Take It Any Way I Can Get It” inspires with the mandate “I’m still survivin’/I got to be dancin’”\, propelled by a joyous gospel-tinged vocal attack backed by Wurlitzer and Southern-style intertwined guitars that dare you to sit still. She co-wrote the funky “Never Get Tired (of Loving You)” with Richard Hammond and her partner Keith Cotton\, propelled by Cotton’s Prophet 6 synth\, for her teenaged daughter: a message of stability in an uncertain world. “That song has a serious subtext\,” says Osborne\, but its “cool\, retro flavor hopefully makes it a joyful thing.” The gorgeous ballad “Whole Wide World” finds Osborne hitting impossibly high notes\, its sound inspired by the Chi-Lites; its message “is about hanging on to hope and envisioning something better for the future.” Another early ‘70’s sound infuses the super-catchy “Boy Dontcha Know”: Osborne’s purring vocals are surrounded by a Spiders from Mars-era piano and Big Star-esque Mando-guitar; its singalong lyrics look at gender nonconformity and the obstacles one faces when born female. \nAbuse of power is the subject of two of the angriest songs on Trouble and Strife\, with their infectious sound imbuing the songs a la a wolf in sheep’s clothing: the bluesy stomp “Hands Off\,” punctuated by distinctive guitar riffs\, denounces corrupt exploiters of people and the planet. “That Was A Lie\,” with scornful lyrics buffeted by buoyant pop rock\, castigates “those camera-ready mouthpieces for corrupt officials\,” according to Osborne. \nTexan Ana Maria Rea\, whose family emigrated to America when she was a child\, contributed spoken passages in her native tongue to the rhythmic “What’s That You Say.” “She tells the story of her family coming from Mexico City\, where her father had been kidnapped\, to the U.S. and how difficult that was\,” says Osborne. “Her message is ‘I’m not afraid\,’ and her mission is to help other people who are in the same position she was in. Ana Maria is a shining light of a person.” \nEscape from a place where “there’s nothin’ left alive” drives Osborne to “Panama\,” a showcase of her vocal range expressing gut-punch lyrics reminiscent of Dylan at his most vitriolic. But it is the Western-flavored title track that Osborne points to as the song most inspired by her “Dylanology” concerts that began in 2016 and led to her 2018 covers album\, “If you spend that intensive time living with his songs\, I think it just rubs off on you\,” Osborne admits. “’Trouble and Strife’ betrays the Dylan influence the most because of the odd characters coming in and out of these absurd situations (much like the ones we find ourselves in today).” \nOsborne’s years of experience as a seasoned road warrior are reflected throughout Trouble and Strife\, the album. Her tenure with what she calls a “meat and potatoes rock ‘n roll band”\, Trigger Hippy\, shows up in “Meat and Potatoes\,” a farewell collaboration with her former bandmates\, cut in a Nashville studio: Written with Trigger Hippy bassist Nick Govrik\, it features that group’s Southern-boogie groove. It’s a feel-good song extolling the virtue of downhome cookin’ – and lovin’. “ \nIt’s been quite the journey since the woman AllMusic.com declared “the most gifted vocalist of her generation” moved from small-town Kentucky to attend NYU film school in the 1980s. Osborne’s astounding voice drew attention when she joined the fun at open mic nights in downtown clubs\, which eventually led to 1995’s Relish\, “that rare breed of album where critical consensus\, popular approval and enduring appeal unite\,” according to American Songwriter. Since then\, she’s performed with Motown’s revered rhythm section the Funk Brothers and toured with the Dead (where she first met and sang with Dylan). She’s harmonized with Stevie Wonder at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, duetted with Luciano Pavarotti\, and co-headlined a tour with the legendary Mavis Staples. She has amassed a loyal fan base as she’s continuously traveled the country. Through it all\, she sees more clearly now than ever the essential role our troubadours play. \n“I feel like music has this important job to do right now\,” Osborne says. “Part of that job is to help imagine a better future – and to hang on to hope. I want to play for people and get them up on their feet and dancing. To let music do that thing it does – bring joy and energy because we really need that right now.” With Trouble and Strife\, she intends to do just that.

SUMMARY:Burton Cummings of The Guess Who
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall and Soul of Buffalo present\nBurton Cummings\nof ‘The Guess Who:’ 60th Anniversary Hits Tour\nwith special guest The Vincent James Explosion\nThursday\, March 6｜7 PM \nBurton Cummings transcends time\, genres\, and generations with a body of work that continues to resonate with fans old and new. His voice has been rated among the finest in rock music. He continues at the top of his game as performer\, singer\, songwriter\, and recording artist. \nTickets start at just $49.50 with limited Meet & Greet and Tour Package experiences available! \n \nPark and ride from D’Youville University (260 Connecticut St.) for this event. The lot is less than a quarter of a mile away from the hall and the shuttle provides a quick and easy way to get to the hall without walking. Parking and shuttle service are free of charge for patrons. Shuttle service begins at 6PM and ends 30 minutes after the conclusion of the concert. \nPlease note the venue is unable to accept Canadian currency for this event. \nAbout Burton Cummings\nAs lead singer and songwriter for Canada’s original rock ‘n’ roll superstars\, The Guess Who\, Burton scored an unprecedented string of international hit singles and albums including “American Woman\,” “These Eyes\,” “Laughing\,” “No Time\,” “Share the Land\,” “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature\,” and others\, all written or co-written by Burton. By 1970\, The Guess Who had sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry before breaking up in 1975. \nThe group achieved a long list of firsts\, including first Canadian group to reach #1 on the Billboard charts – holding that spot for three weeks – and first to earn a platinum album for U.S. sales of more than one million copies. Rolling Stone magazine hailed The Guess Who as “one of rock’s most consistently fascinating maverick bands” with a succession of songs “that has few equals among contemporary North American groups.” Dick Clark described the group as rock innovators and ambassadors of Canadian music. \nWith a Winnipeg Community Centre and Performing Arts Centre named in his honor\, Burton is a candidate for Canada’s most beloved rock ‘n’ roll son\, yet he also enjoys a level of world-wide stature shared by only a handful of other Canadian artists. \nThe vast Guess Who catalogue endures today with staples of classic rock and oldies radio as well as in feature films\, including: American Beauty\, Almost Famous\, Cable Guy\, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me\, and Jackie Brown. “When I think back on having five million-selling records in the Top 10\, one after the other\, I can hardly believe it\,” says Burton\, “I was just twenty years old. The scope and magnitude of our success escaped all of us. It really didn’t sink in until years later.” \nBeginning his solo career in 1976\, Burton continued his winning streak with a gold record for his solo debut single “Stand Tall\,” produced by legendary hitmaker Richard Perry\, who numbered among his clients Barbra Streisand\, Carly Simon and Ringo Starr. He followed this with more than a dozen hit singles and albums including “I’m Scared\,” “My Own Way to Rock\,” “I Will Play a Rhapsody\,” “Timeless Love\,” and “You Saved My Soul.” Sold-out tours across Canada and the United States solidified Burton’s stature as a top entertainer. Burton’s 1978 album Dream of a Child became the first quadruple platinum-selling album by a Canadian artist. \nThrough the 1980s and ‘90s\, Burton continued to tour and joined Beatles drummer Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. The success of Lenny Kravitz’ cover of “American Woman” in the hit feature film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me brought renewed attention to the original Guess Who. The group reunited in 1999 for the closing ceremonies of the Pan-American Games with a television audience numbering in the tens of millions. Several high-profile North American tours followed. \nAs the voice of all of the classic Guess Who hit songs\, Burton has toured with his long-time band for the past twenty plus years across North America\, as well as joining Randy Bachman onstage as Bachman-Cummings\, performing the songs from the original The Guess Who\, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Burton’s solo career. \nAbout the Vincent James Explosion\nThe Vincent James Explosion is a high powered fusion of Rock\, Blues & Jazz\, formed in 2005 by guitarist and composer Vincent James Mastrantonio.  Based out of Buffalo\, NY. they have released four all original albums.  They have performed on many festival stages and have also been direct support for many iconic artists\, including The Alex Skolnick Trio\, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express\, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush\, Jeff Lorber Fusion and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra playing Led Zepplin. \nThe current lineup features Vincent on guitar and vocals\, Jerry Sampson on bass and vocals and Jim Lisner on drums. \n

SUMMARY:Over the Rainbow: Celebrating the 120th Birthday of Harold Arlen
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, February 16\, 2025\, at Kleinhans Music Hall as we pay tribute to one of Buffalo’s most legendary musical icons\, Harold Arlen\, the composer behind some of the greatest songs in the Great American Songbook. A visionary whose work includes the iconic “Over the Rainbow\,” Arlen’s compositions have shaped American music for generations. This special event is being produced through a collaborative effort by JazzBuffalo and Kleinhans Music Hall and honors Arlen’s immense contributions to jazz and popular music. \nThe event will be headlined by Pete Malinverni\, a native of the Western New York region and an acclaimed jazz pianist\, composer\, arranger\, and educator based in New York City\, along with internationally renowned violinist Julie Kurtzman and rising star jazz vocalist Anaïs Reno. Together\, they will bring Arlen’s music to life with historical stories\, fresh arrangements\, and heartfelt interpretations of his timeless songs. \nPete Malinverni\, Julie Kurtzman\, and Anaïs Reno (Photo Credits: JazzBuffalo Contributor\, Jack Zuff) \nHarold Arlen’s musical legacy is rich with classics like “Stormy Weather\,” “Come Rain or Come Shine\,” and “Get Happy\,” but perhaps none is as famous as “Over the Rainbow\,” written for The Wizard of Oz. This song\, often hailed as the greatest of the 20th century\, earned Arlen an Academy Award and cemented his place in American music history. \nThough Arlen’s extraordinary talent was born and nurtured in Buffalo\, his recognition in his hometown remains sparse. This event aims to celebrate his life and work in the very city where his remarkable journey began. Arlen’s Buffalo roots fundamentally shaped his legendary career\, from playing piano on the S.S. Canadiana to becoming a major figure on Broadway and Hollywood. \nMark your calendars for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration of Harold Arlen’s 120th birthday! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserved seating for this special event\, honoring one of Buffalo’s finest musical sons\, is now on sale! Don’t miss this chance to experience the magic of Arlen’s music in the historic Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information about Harold Arlen’s incredible legacy\, visit the online exhibition curated by Chana Revell Kotzin at jewishbuffalohistory.org/arlen. \nFor an insightful article about Harold Arlen’s Buffalo legacy\, read the article by Ed Healy\, former Vice President of Marketing at Visit Buffalo Niagara\, at https://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/harold-arlen-buffalos-great-american-songwriter/ \nBe part of this extraordinary event where Buffalo honors one of its most treasured musical talents.

SUMMARY:Will Downing
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall & Soul of Buffalo Present:\nWill Downing\nwith Special Guest\, Buffalo NY’s own\nWILL HOLTON\nThursday\, November 14\, 2024\nKleinhans Music Hall\nDoors at 6:30PM / Show at 8PM\nAll Ages / Reserved Seating\nWill Downing will appear with his full band (not the BPO)\n\nCelebrating an insane 35 years in the “bizness” and with 27 records to his credit\, Grammy-nominated R&B | Smooth Jazz singer Will Downing will not be stopped! Flexing on his international appeal\, lead single “What Part of My Love” from his new record Soul Rising shot to the top of the UK Soul Chart Top 30 and parked there. With recordings for Island\, Mercury\, Verve\, Motown\, Sophisticated Soul\, and Shanachie Records\, Downing is an industry veteran whose silky baritone has been compared to Luther Vandross and Brian McKnight. \nAbout Will Downing \nCareer highlights include the #1 R&B chart-topping album After Tonight (2007) and Classique (2009)\, which peaked at #22 on the Billboard 100. Downing’s collaborators include a Who’s Who of R&B | Soul | Jazz headliners: Jennifer Holliday\, Kool & the Gang\, Gerald Albright\, Billy Ocean\, Regina Belle\, and Maysa\, among others. \nWill Downing was born and raised in a working-class family in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn. His father was a skycap at a local airport and his mother was a schoolteacher. As a teen\, Downing was a member of a school choir. At age 16\, he sang publishing house demos for songwriters who couldn’t sing well\, earning $50 each. \nIn 1988\, he signed a recording contract with 4th & B’way Records and released his first solo album Will Downing. It included a cover version of the John Coltrane classic\, “A Love Supreme\,” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs record chart. Downing switched to Island Records for his second release\, Come Together as One (1989). \nDowning moved to Mercury Records for his fourth outing\, Love’s the Place to Be (1993). All the Man You Need\, released on Motown Records\, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Album in 2000. It included “When You Need Me\,” a duet with Chante Moore. In 2002\, Downing received the International Association of African-American Music Diamond Award. \nIn 2023\, Will suffered a soul-crushing loss\, with the unexpected passing of his daughter Aron Siobhan Downing in January. As a father\, he was devastated…heartbroken. As an artist\, he sought solace and comfort through his craft\, facing the hurt head-on\, exploring multiple themes of love to begin healing. Persevering through the pain\, Downing’s soul is rising…literally! The Prince of Sophisticated Soul is proud to share his 7- song masterclass of triumph over tragedy\, Soul Rising! Although not a “concept” album\, the pieces of Soul Rising fit together beautifully as a single statement in honor and celebration of his eternal love for Siobhan.

Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. \n\n\n\nIn 2001\, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation\, space exploration\, and national security. \nIn 2004\, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy\, dubbed the “Moon\, Mars\, and Beyond” commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006\, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council\, which guides NASA through its perennial need to fit ambitious visions into restricted budgets. \n\nNeil deGrasse Tyson by Patrick Queen for Columbia Magazine \nIn addition to dozens of professional publications\, Dr. Tyson has written\, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005\, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson’s fifteen books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution\, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS NOVA four-part mini-series Origins\, in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered in September 2004. \nTwo of Tyson’s other books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries\, which was a New York Times bestseller\, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet\, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS NOVA documentary The Pluto Files\, based on the book\, premiered in March 2010. \nIn February 2012\, Tyson released his tenth book\, containing every thought he has ever had on the past\, present\, and future of space exploration: Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier. \nFor five seasons\, beginning in the fall of 2006\, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW\, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe. \nDuring the summer of 2009 Tyson identified a cadre of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular Podcast\, for three years it enjoyed a limited-run Television Series on the National Geographic Channel. StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would\, or could\, like science. In its first year on television and in three successive seasons\, it was nominated for a Best Informational Programming Emmy. \nTyson is the recipient of twenty-three honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid “13123 Tyson.” And by zoologists\, with the naming of Indirani Tysoni\, a native species of leaping frog in India. On the lighter side\, Tyson was voted “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive” by People Magazine in 2000. \nIn 2017\, Tyson published Astrophysics for People In A Hurry\, which was a domestic and international bestseller. This adorably readable book is an introduction to all that you’ve read and heard about that’s making news in the universe—consummated\, in one place\, succinctly presented\, for people in a hurry. \nThat was followed in 2018 by Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military\, coauthored with Avis Lang\, in 2019 by Letters from an Astrophysicist\, both New York Times Bestsellers\, and in 2021 by Cosmic Queries: StarTalk’s Guide to Who We Are\, How We Got Here\, and Where We are Going\, coauthored with James Trefil. \nTyson served as Executive Science Editor and on-camera Host & Narrator for Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey\, the 21stcentury continuation of Carl Sagan’s landmark television series. The show began in March 2014 and ran thirteen episodes in primetime on the FOX network\, and appeared in 181 countries in 45 languages around the world on the National Geographic Channels. Cosmos won four Emmy Awards\, a Peabody Award\, two Critics Choice awards\, as well as a dozen other industry recognitions. SUMMARY:Haley Reinhart
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall & Soul of Buffalo present: \nHaley Reinhart\nOff The Ground Tour\n\nwith Cami Clune \nA timeless voice outlasts eras. It feels just as home in the sixties as the TikTok age. Haley Reinhart brandishes such a voice. The expansive scope of her range comes into full focus on her 5th solo release\, Off The Ground. \nIn many ways\, Haley began working towards the album and her artistry as a child. Mom and dad share a “Midnight Band\,” and unsurprisingly\, their daughter would sing before she could talk. She spent countless hours engaged in rhyming games with her mom or locked into a call-and-response as a baby with her father. \nOpening the evening is Cami Clune\, a singer/songwriter from Buffalo\, NY. Incorporating elements from pop\, rock\, and country\, her sound is a unique fusion of genres. She first captured national attention as a semi-finalist on Season 19 of NBC’s The Voice. In her blind audition\, she received a 4 chair turn with a block\, the only contestant her season with those combined accolades. She chose John Legend as her coach\, but ultimately landed a spot on Kelly Clarkson’s team\, as she used her only steal for Cami in the knockout round. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Haley Reinhart\nIn 2009\, Haley was the first songstress to join her high school jazz band to perform at both the Montreux and Umbria jazz festivals. Her fascination with all things classic continued as she became a fan of The Beatles\, Janis Joplin\, Ella Fitzgerald and Sly & The Family Stone. These influences led her to record at Sunset Sound\, paying homage to classic rock and pop hits from the late sixties titled. Haley performs regularly with Robby Krieger of The Doors among other rock legends. \nThe double platinum-certified Chicago-born/Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter exudes an empowering level of charisma and confidence earned by a quiet\, decade-long grind. Haley landed third place and became a fan favorite on season 10 of American Idol. She recently returned to AI\, this time as a mentor\, coaching contestants in the Soul Genre. \nHer dynamic presence has powered four previous solo albums— Listen Up! [2012] Interscope\, Better [2016] Red Dot\, What’s That Sound? [2017] Concord\, and Lo- Fi Soul [2019] on her own label. Haley has been known to leave her mark on countless films and commercials\, singing in the new Mazda ad\, for Chase Bank\, as well as on TV shows including Love Island\, Gossip Girl\, Nashville\, Riverdale\, The Wilds\, America’s Got Talent\, Dancing with the Stars\, and more. \nMeanwhile\, her take on the Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love” generated a remarkable 325 million Spotify streams and 100 million YouTube views within a few years of its release. What started off as a session sung for an Extra gum commercial turned out to be a chart-topping-radio hit and touring sensation by serendipity. Haley’s remake peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and No. 31 on the Billboard Adult Pop Airplay chart. \n \nHaley has also collaborated regularly with other talented musicians. She’s featured on Postmodern Jukebox’s highest-viewed videos on YouTube (over 300 million views) and has dueted with movie star Jeff Goldblum on two tracks from his chart-topping jazz standards collection\, The Capitol Studios Sessions. Haley joined Jeff for an unforgettable performance on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! In 2019\, she continued pushing boundaries by lending her voice and songwriting skills to Vicetone’s EDM dance hit “Something Strange\,” as well as an EDM version of Radiohead’s “Creep” with DJ Naeleck in 2022. \nExpanding her oeuvre\, Haley voices a young boy named Bill Murphy on the Netflix hit animated series based on comedian Bill Burr’s childhood – F Is For Family (seasons one through five out now)\, and made her acting debut in the #1 hit Robert Rodriguez Netflix film We Can Be Heroes\, where she played a superhero whose voice is her power. \nBoth 2022 and 2023 were banner years. In September 2022\, her newest EP\, Off The Ground\, released worldwide. The extended play features seven original songs all either written or co-written by Haley. From Fall 2022 to Fall 2023\, she headlined the “Off The Ground Tour” and played to rave reviews in over 100 theaters and rock rooms throughout North America. \nIn 2024\, Haley has taken her career to another level. After spending the first half of the year writing and recording a new album\, Haley will embark on another leg of the “Off The Ground” headline tour\, which will run from May to November 2024\, with a stop in Buffalo NY. The show is just beginning. \nLIMITED VIP MEET & GREET TICKET AVAILABLE! \nJoin Haley Reinhart for a memorable Meet & Greet experience prior to the performance at Kleinhans Musica Hall! The experience includes a photo with Haley\, who will also sign up to two items per ticket holder\, plus your choice from among the best seats in the house. Most notably\, she took on the lead role in the powerful short film “Blink of an Eye\,” shedding light on the pressing issue of opioid abuse\, while also contributing her vocal talents to the title track. \nSince her run on The Voice\, Cami has been diligently honing in on her craft\, focusing on writing and recording her own original music. She is so excited to share what she has been working on with the world. This past year\, she ventured into new musical territory by forming “Cami and The Fringe\,” a band that has not only sparked her creativity but also facilitated her artistic growth. Cami’s single “Rewind” is to be released June 14th. She cannot wait for you to hear this song\, as she feels that it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her musical journey.
