Our sets includes jazz vocals from the Great American Songbook. The band benefited from the fantastic guidance and arrangement talents of Dick Griffo \, the legendary alto sax player formerly with Woody Herman and now honors his memory along with the memory of Jim Kurzdorfer\, the great bassist and original member of Spyro Gyra who served as a mentor. Come and re-live the era of jazz greatness. \n Journeyman drummer and educator\, John Bacon Jr\, leads this quintet of young professionals. Choro[vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nAbout Bokyung Byun\nPraised by Classical Guitar Magazine as “confident and quite extraordinary\,” Korean guitarist\, Bokyung Byun enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after guitarists of her generation. Byun holds the distinction of being the first female winner of the prestigious JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition\, where Falletta herself described  Byun’s performance as “stunning\, showcasing her gorgeous tone\, immaculate technique\, and sophisticated musicianship.” This win is among many wherein Byun excelled in the competitive circuit\, including winning the grand prize at the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition\, known as the most prestigious guitar competition in the world. \nA bevy of orchestras\, festivals\, workshops\, and guitar societies look to Byun for solo performances and masterclasses. In recent seasons\, Byun has performed as a soloist with orchestras\, including the Buffalo Philharmonic\, the Utah Symphony\, West Los Angeles Symphony\, New Juilliard Ensemble\, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra\, among others. Her solo recital highlights include performances at the Kumho Young Artist Series\, Philadelphia Guitar Festival\, Aspen-Salida Concert Series\, Toronto Guitar Weekend\, Guitar Montréal\, Ellnora | The Guitar Festival\, and San Diego Guitar Festival. She was acclaimed for performing “eloquently through a diverse and challenging program\,” by Michelle Fratus\, president of the board of the Knoxville Guitar Society\, and having “confidence\, passion\, excellent projection and great dynamic contrast” by Heather Morand Clark\, president of the Guitar Society of Toronto. \nCommitted to expanding the role of a 21st-century musician\, Byun’s concert program often features contemporary music alongside traditional repertoire. As Byun herself says\, “it’s vital and exciting to audiences for concerts to join the new with the old. For guitar music to continue to grow\, I believe that new works must actively be cultivated in programming\, and it is my hope that audiences leave my performances with new experiences.” This skill at navigating both classic repertoire and fresh work has led her to co-found Sounding Board: The New Music Initiative for Guitarists and Composers. The project focuses on promoting collaborative relationships between composers and performers to create new works for guitar\, and its inaugural festival in Besançon\, France in 2019 has been praised as “extraordinary\, in the strict sense of the word\,” by La Presse de Gray in France. \nByun’s debut recording in 2020 has been praised by Soundboard Magazine as “a very beautiful disc. From the first notes of the “Gallarda” from Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Escarraman\, we are treated to extraordinary musicianship\, technical assurance\, and beauty of sound.” American Record Guide says “Byun’s interpretation enlivens them with creative phrasings\, articulations\, spacing\, and dynamics\, which take the listener beyond most performances I have heard.” \nBorn in Seoul\, Korea\, Byun began playing guitar at the age of six. At eleven\, she took the stage for her first solo recital\, leading to an early start in her teen years performing numerous concert tours around Korea\, to enthusiastic response\, including millions of views on YouTube. By her teen years\, she had gained national attention for first-prize finishes in three renowned competitions: the Korea Guitar Association\, the Music Association of Korea\, and the Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition. \nByun soon moved to the United States\, where she briefly studied in Los Angeles before moving to New York City\, where she entered The Juilliard School at the age of sixteen. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. She is grateful to the masterful instruction of her pedagogues\, who include Scott Tennant\, William Kanengiser\, Chen Zhi\, Tae-soo Kim\, and Sharon Isbin. \nIn 2020\, Byun co-founded Guitarlab which has provided an innovative online learning platform offering cutting-edge classes designed for young professionals around the world. Byun is currently on the guitar faculty of California State University Fullerton. She is sponsored by Augustine Strings and plays a guitar by Dieter Mueller (2019). SUMMARY:NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE | Bryan Smith: Capturing the Impossible
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Bryan Smith as part of the National Geographic Live 2023 series! New for this season\, the series will take place in the main auditorium at Kleinhans so audiences can enjoy the cushy seats\, the wonderful ambiance and reserve their seats in advance! \nPhoto by Bryan Smith \nFor extreme filmmaker Bryan Smith\, the line between going for it and going too far is often blurry—especially when you’re exploring the earth’s most remote environments. In this edge-of-your-seat presentation\, Bryan shows you what it means to adventure with purpose\, and why he believes the best expeditions are the ones with a healthy chance of failure. He’s faced machete-wielding locals in Papua New Guinea\, suffered frostbite during the first-ever ice climb of Niagara Falls\, explored the South Pacific’s deepest canyons\, and scaled North America’s tallest mountains to bring you behind the scenes and capture the impossible. \nAbout \nPhoto by Mike McKay \nBryan Smith is an award-winning filmmaker based out of Squamish\, British Columbia. His first documentary\, 49 Megawatts\, received acclaim both for its amazing kayaking footage and insightful exploration of the controversy over British Columbia’s river-based energy production. An online version went viral and led to two-feature length sea kayaking films. His work has appeared at numerous film festivals across the world\, including the prized Banff and Telluride Mountain Film Festivals. \nIn the past few years\, Smith has built on his adventure film roots and developed a strong reputation in both TV documentary and commercial cinematography. With a knack for storytelling\, an ability to assemble great teams\, and an insane work ethic\, his client list has grown to include National Geographic\, Discovery\, Disney\, Red Bull\, Patagonia\, New Belgium Brewing\, Arcteryx\, and more. In 2010 he earned a National Geographic Expedition Grant for his work in Kamchatka\, Russia\, and launched into digital media\, co-producing and directing The Season web TV series. He has worked as both a Field Producer and Director of Photography for National Geographic Television on shows including Alaska Wing Men\, Explorer\, Nat Geo Amazing and Monster Fish. More recently\, he co-produced and directed The Man Who Can Fly\, a 60-minute special for the National Geographic Channel Explorer series. \nWith extensive experience on Red\, Alexa\, Phantom\, Sony F900\, Panasonic Varicam\, and just about every ENG camera platform\, his experience at getting cameras into difficult and remote locations makes him an incredible asset to any production. Smith brings a diverse perspective to non-fiction filmmaking\, having worked on TV\, independent documentary\, and several commercial projects. \nThank you to our sponsors!\nLead Sponsors:\n   \nPromotional Sponsors:

It involved the capturing of a live recording that revisits and reinterprets his debut 2012 album New Gospel\, this time round employing a band of super-heavyweight musicians.  Marquis Hill’s rise over the last few years has been striking and there’s no letting up. SUMMARY:Brian Culbertson
DESCRIPTION:SOUL OF BUFFALO PRESENTS\nBRIAN CULBERTSON: THE TRILOGY TOUR\nSUNDAY\, MARCH 26\, 2023\nKLEINHANS MUSIC HALL\nDOORS AT 6PM / SHOW AT 7PM\nRESERVED SEATING\nULTIMATE VIP PACKAGES ALSO AVAILABLE \nOver the course of crafting a 25-album catalog and architecting nearly 40 Billboard No. 1 singles as a multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter and producer\, BRIAN CULBERTSON has charted his own unique course in music. Label him jazz and he makes a funk record. Call him an R&B artist and he drops an acoustic jazz trio collection. Brand him pop and he creates a 32-minute New Age opus. And you’d be hard pressed to name another instrumentalist of his ilk who can mount an elaborately designed concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months. \nCulbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. “Long Night Out” landed him a lengthy record deal and signaled that a star was born. \nHis upcoming nationwide tour kicks off in 2023\, with a stop in BUFFALO\, NY ON SUNDAY\, MARCH 26\, 2023 at KLEINHANS MUSIC HALL! Brian’s 2022 show at Buffalo State College was SOLD OUT! Get your tickets early! \nLimited Ultimate VIP Experience Packages are also available via the ticket link. \nDescription of package: \n\nOne (1) Ultimate Seat Location\nInvitation to Soundcheck Viewing\nOne (1) Signed Tour Poster\nCrowd-Free Merch Access\n\nFlash forward to present day\, Culbertson composed thirty songs that populate the three albums in “The Trilogy” that describes the three-part arc of a long-term relationship: the hot and steamy “falling in love” phase\, the rocky middle when perhaps they even break up for a bit\, and the couple reunites to live “happily ever after” phase. The Trilogy Tour will feature a mix of songs from The Trilogy Albums\, as well as the greatest hits from Brian Culbertson’s catalog.  \n“Hearing the three albums in a row provides the context. All the songs on ‘Red’ (October 2021) were clearly about passion and love. ‘Blue’ (January 2022) is melancholy and sad songs\, breakup songs and ‘losing people’ songs. Once you get to part three\, ‘White’ (May 2022) is all about songs that have an uplifting feel to them. Stylistically\, they all feel similar even though they are emotionally broad” said Culbertson.  \nPossessing style\, panache and a savvy business mind capable of moving the needle in music and beyond\, Culbertson founded and curates the annual Napa Valley and Chicago Jazz Getaways\, which have attracted guests from all over the globe to experience his premier events.  \nWhether you’re listening to music from “The Trilogy” on record or live in concert\, you’re hearing an eclectic\, entertaining and engaging set from an artist at the peak of his power. \nNOTICE: All VIP package elements will be rendered invalid if resold. SUMMARY:Marcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nAcoustic Songs & Stories\nFeaturing\nMarcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis\nMary Seaton Room\, Kleinhans Music Hall\nTinsley Ellis and Marcia Ball are excited to present an intimate evening of their music and memories called Acoustic Songs and Stories. They will each play a set of their own songs.  Tinsley\, an elder statesman of the Blues world\, will perform many of his most popular songs from his twenty albums\, plus some delta blues and classics on his National Steel and Martin acoustic guitars.  Marcia\, a five-time Grammy nominee\, will play the piano and sing her often raucous and sometimes touching original songs full of the characters and places that shaped her.  They will weave the music together with stories from their years on stage and on the road.  Finally\, they will come together as a duo to close the night playing songs together and swapping tales of their travels and travails.  \nAbout Marcia Ball\n“Fifty years have passed in a flash\,” says pianist\, songwriter\, and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career.  Ball\, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year\, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse party every time she takes the stage. Born in Orange\, Texas and raised in Vinton\, Louisiana\, her deep Acadian heritage and a lifetime of absorbing Gulf Coast rhythm and blues is evident in her original songs and the classics she chooses to cover.  This has made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world.  With each new release\, her reputation as a profoundly soulful singer\, a boundlessly talented pianist and a courageous\, inventive songwriter continues to grow. Her love of the road has led to years of soul-satisfying performances at festivals\, concert halls and clubs. \nIn Marcia’s most recent album\, Shine Bright\, she has put together the most musically substantial\, hopeful and uplifting set of songs of her five-decade career.  Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) and recorded in Texas and Louisiana\, Shine Bright contains twelve songs (including eight originals)\, ranging from the title track’s rousing appeal for public and private acts of courage to the upbeat call to action of Pots And Pans\, a song inspired by renowned Texas political writer and humorist Molly Ivins.  From the humorous advice of Life Of The Party to the poignantly optimistic World Full Of Love\, the intensity of Ball’s conviction never wavers while\, simultaneously\, the fun never stops.  “It is a ridiculously hopeful\, cheerful record\,” she says\, in light of some of the album’s more serious subject matter.  The secret\, according to Ball “is to set the political songs to a good dance beat.” \n“A welcome ray of sunshine…Ball is a killer pianist\, a great singer and songwriter. Potent blues\, sweet zydeco\, soulful\, fast and furious Texas boogie…heartfelt\, powerful and righteous.” – Billboard \nMarcia grew up in a family whose female members all played piano and she began taking lessons at age five\, playing old Tin Pan Alley and popular music tunes from her grandmother’s collection.  But it wasn’t until she was 13 that Marcia discovered the power of soul music.  One day in 1962\, she sat amazed as Irma Thomas performed on a show at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans and delivered the most spirited and moving performance the young teenager had ever seen.  A few years later she attended Louisiana State University and after dropping out to explore the brave new hippie world of the late 1960s\, she was invited to try out for a blues-based rock band called Gum.  She made the cut and her future was set. \nIn 1970\, Ball left Baton Rouge for San Francisco.  Her car broke down in Austin\, and while waiting for repairs she fell in love with the city and decided to stay.  It wasn’t long before she was performing in local clubs with a band called Freda And The Firedogs\, a group that pioneered the Progressive Country movement\, which attracted many musicians and significant media attention to Austin.   It was around this time that she discovered Professor Longhair\, the seminal New Orleans piano player.  “Once I found out about Professor Longhair\,” recalls Ball\, “I knew I had found my direction.” \n“Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky\, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.” – The New York Times \nWhen Freda And The Firedogs broke up in 1974\, Ball launched her solo career and began touring outside of Texas and Louisiana.  She signed with Capitol Records in 1977\, debuting with the country-rock album Circuit Queen.  As she created and honed her own sound\, she released six critically acclaimed titles on the Rounder Records label during the 1980s and 1990s.  In 1990\, Ball—collaborating with Angela Strehli and Lou Ann Barton—recorded the hugely successful Dreams Come True on the Antone’s label.  At the end of 1997\, Marcia finished work on a similar “three divas of the blues” project for Rounder\, this time in the distinguished company of Tracy Nelson and her longtime inspiration\, Irma Thomas.  The CD\, Sing It!\, was released in 1998 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. \nMarcia Ball has appeared many times on national television over the years\, including the PBS special In Performance At The White House along with B.B. King and Della Reese\, Austin City Limits and HBO’s Treme.  She performed in Piano Blues\, the film directed by Clint Eastwood included in Martin Scorsese’s The Blues series which aired on PBS television nationwide in 2003.  Marcia also appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman with The New Orleans Social Club\, where she not only reached millions of people\, but also helped to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.  In 2012\, she had a role in the independent film Angels Sing starring Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.  In 2017 she performed on NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas\, live from The Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. \nBall joined Alligator Records in 2001 with the release of the critically acclaimed Presumed Innocent.  The CD won the 2002 Blues Music Award for Blues Album Of The Year.  Her follow-up\, So Many Rivers\, was nominated for a Grammy Award\, and won the 2004 Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year as well as the coveted Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year award.  Her next release\, Live! Down The Road\, released in 2005\, also garnered a Grammy nomination\, as did 2008’s Peace\, Love & BBQ (the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart).  She holds eleven Blues Music Awards\, ten Living Blues Awards\, and five Grammy Award nominations.  2010’s Grammy-nominated Roadside Attractions and 2014’s The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man successfully grew her fan base even further. \nShe has been inducted into both the Gulf Coast Music Hall Of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.  The Texas State legislature named her the official 2018 Texas State Musician.  In 2018\, Marcia was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. \n“She’s as perfect as an artist can be.” – The Houston Chronicle \nSince March of 2020 and the onset of the COVID pandemic and subsequent lock-down\, Marcia has filled her time with work on a nonprofit organization she co-founded called HOME – Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers\, which pays rent and utilities for older musicians in the Austin area.  HOMEaustin.org.  She also improved her streaming and virtual performance abilities enough to participate in many on-line fundraising efforts throughout the year.  She put her domestic skills to work making masks.  She and her husband Gordon got a dog to replace their dear Lily.  She has written songs and  she is collaborating on a musical play which she hopes becomes a real live show in the near future. \nAnd she’s getting the band ready to get back out on the road.  “I still love the feel of the wheels rolling\,” she says\, “and the energy in a room full of people ready to go wherever it is we take them.” \n  \nAbout Tinsley Ellis\n Georgia troubadour Tinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his whole life. Born in Atlanta 1957 and raised in southern Florida\, he acquired his first guitar at age seven\, inspired by seeing The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like many kids his age\, Ellis discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds\, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like the Allman Brothers Band. 20 albums (and millions of miles traveled) later on record labels such as Alligator and Capricorn\, Ellis has become an elder statesman of the blues world. \nWith his new project Tinsley Ellis – Acoustic Songs And Stories\, Ellis performs many of his most popular songs (plus delta blues and classics by artists like Gregg Allman\, Bob Dylan and Leo Kottke) on his 1937 National Steel and 1969 Martin D-35. Ellis weaves the music together with interesting and sometimes ribald stories from over 40 years of a life spent on stages and in motels and truck stops. Ellis shows no signs of slowing down and is headed your way with his newest and perhaps most unique project.

SUMMARY:NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE | Sandesh Kadur: Wild Cats of India
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Sandesh Kadur as part of the National Geographic Live 2023 series! New for this season\, the series will take place in the main auditorium at Kleinhans so audiences can enjoy the cushy seats\, the wonderful ambiance and reserve their seats in advance! \nPhoto by Sandesh Kadur \nSandesh Kadur first encountered a wild cat in his native India as a teenager—after sitting in a tree for hours under a full moon\, a leopard walked directly under him. The experience sparked a fascination that led him to spend his career documenting the country’s unmatched diversity of wild cats. With landscapes spanning the towering Himalaya\, arid plains\, and dense jungles\, India is home to 15 species of wild cats\, more than any other country in the world. While many of its big cats are well known and thoroughly documented\, Kadur is on a mission to highlight the country’s lesser-known felines in order to protect their future. \nFinding and filming India’s often elusive small cats challenges Kadur’s patience\, natural history knowledge\, and skills as a photographer and filmmaker. He traveled to remote villages in the frigid Himalaya in search of the grumpy-faced Pallas’s cat\, whose tiny size made it extraordinarily difficult to track. His pursuit of a fishing cat\, which jumps into water to catch its prey and has learned to thrive alongside human habitation\, brought him to one of India’s most densely populated regions. And he spent years attempting to capture images of the mysterious clouded leopard\, considered the evolutionary link between big and small cats\, in the wild.  \nThrough Kadur’s captivating images and video\, get an up-close look at a world of wild cats you’ve never seen before. \nAbout\nPhoto by Felis Images \nBAFTA Award-winning filmmaker and National Geographic Fellow Sandesh Kadur creates documentary films that have aired worldwide on prominent networks such as National Geographic\, the BBC\, Netflix\, Discovery Channel\, and Animal Planet. He is a Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers. Through the use of images both still and moving\, Kadur hopes to harness the power of nature education as a catalyst for long-term change. His goal is to inspire his audience to protect and appreciate what remains of our wilderness. He is also the Founder/Director of Felis Creations – a media and visual arts company based in Bangalore that focuses on creating content that inspires conservation. \nKadur’s work spans from the elusive snow leopard in the Himalaya to the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the endangered Kemp’s Ridley turtles in Mexico. He is the producer of a three-part docuseries for National Geographic titled “Wild Cats of India” and “India’s Wild Leopards.” He is also the co-author of two books: Sahyadris: India’s Western Ghats—A Vanishing Heritage (2005) and Himalaya—Mountains of Life (2013). His first documentary\, Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon (2002)\, which was accompanied by his first book\, earned critical acclaim while drawing attention to one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots and helped convince UNESCO to name the Western Ghats a World Heritage Site in 2012. \nPhoto by Felis Images \nKadur’s work has won a slew of prestigious international awards\, including a 2017 EMMY nomination and the 2017 BAFTA Award for his work on BBC’s Planet Earth II. In 2013\, he received the Nature’s Best Windland Smith Rice Award and the North American Nature Photographers (NANPA) Vision Award in recognition of early career excellence and continuation of vision and inspiration to others in nature photography\, conservation\, and education. He has also won the International Conservation Photographer Award (2012)\, CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year (2008)\, Gold REMI Award for Creative Excellence (2008)\, multiple International Wildlife Film Festival Merit awards\, and was nominated twice for a Green Oscar at the Wildscreen Film Festival\, among many other awards and nominations.  \nKadur hopes that his photographs and documentaries will reveal places and species people rarely see and will inspire new passion to protect them. \n  \nThank you to our sponsors!\nLead Sponsors:\n   \nPromotional Sponsors:

SUMMARY:CANCELED -- Habib Koité and Bamada
DESCRIPTION:Due to the impending weather situation and the difficult travel conditions that may arise from it\, tonight’s concert at Kleinhans Music Hall featuring Habib Koité and Bamada has unfortunately been canceled. All tickets will be refunded in full. Please contact the Box Office with any questions at (716) 885-5000.\n\nKleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Habib Koité and Bamada\, with opening act the African American Cultural Center Dance and Drummer Company\, to the Mary Seaton Room on Thursday\, November 17th at 7:30 PM. \nOne of Africa’s most popular and recognized musicians\, Habib Koité is a modern troubadour with extraordinary appeal because Koité’s musicianship\, wit and wisdom translate across cultures. Hailing from the musically prolific West African nation of Mali\, the guitarist and composer has been named the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone. Over the past decade\, his artistry and magnetic personality have made him an international star\, delighting audiences the world over\, and placing him firmly among the leading figures in contemporary world music. Bonnie Raitt proclaims\, “first there was Hendrix\, then Stevie Ray\, and now Habib.” \nHabib’s much-anticipated new release\, Kharifa\, was recorded entirely in Bamako. The sound of Mali\, its rich and diversified musical traditions\, and its instruments permeate the music of this superb project. It can be said that the Malian guitarist has matured\, evolved\, while once again successfully keeping one foot firmly anchored in the past. The original compositions and covers that form the backbone of this new album reflect the griot’s open spirit\, his willingness to travel through the rich Malian heritage while building the foundations of a resolutely modern music\, also influenced by Western rock and folk. \nOften compared to Eric Clapton\, the Malian reveals himself to be closer to a JJ Cale\, in his manner of occupying space with the guitar\, playing the note rather than notes\, allowing arpeggios to flow through the percussion\, caressing while directing with true virtuosity\, the rhythmic breath of each track on the album. \nHabib Koité takes his time. \nThis shows in his interest and involvement in everyday life in Bamako. Without ever denying the problems that plague his city and country – pollution\, poverty\, idleness\, insalubrity\, disease – Habib remains resolutely optimistic\, hopeful\, fighting against intolerance\, ignorance and obscurantism. While Mandé talks about reconciliation\, Kharifa calls for accountability of each individual. “Life is a daily struggle” he sings. \n  \nThanks to our Promotional Partner\, The African American Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Bill Maher
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Bill Maher to the Kleinhans Music Hall stage on October 9\, 2022! Don’t miss this evening of savvy satire with the boundary-breaking Bill Maher. \nAbout Bill Maher\nFor more than twenty-five years\, Bill Maher has set the boundaries of where funny\, political talk can go on American television. First on “Politically Incorrect” (Comedy Central\, ABC\, 1993- 2002)\, and for the last nineteen years on HBO’s “Real Time\,” Maher’s combination of unflinching honesty and big laughs have garnered him 41 Emmy nominations. Maher won his first Emmy in 2014 as executive producer for the HBO series\, “VICE.” In October of 2008\, this same combination was on display in Maher’s uproarious and unprecedented swipe at organized religion\, “Religulous\,” directed by Larry Charles (“Borat”). \nIn addition to his television program – which has featured such visitors as President Barack Obama\, Vice President Joseph Biden\, Bernie Sanders\, Elizabeth Warren\, Mayor Pete Buttigieg\, Howard Stern\, Barbra Streisand\, Kerry Washington\, Michael Steele\, Megyn Kelly\, Ronan Farrow\, Howard Dean\, Michael Moore\, Eva Longoria\, Rev. Jesse Jackson\, Jim Carrey\, Gen. Wesley Clark\, Susan Sarandon\, Gary Hart and Pat Buchanan – Maher has written five bestsellers: “True Story\,” “Does Anybody Have a Problem with That? Politically Incorrect’s Greatest Hits\,” “When You Ride Alone\, You Ride with Bin Laden\,” “New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer\,” and\, “The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass.” \nMaher started his career as a stand-up comedian in 1979\, and still performs at least fifty dates a year in Las Vegas and in sold out theaters all across the country. Four of his eleven stand-up specials for HBO – 2014’s “Bill Maher: Live from DC\,” 2007’s “The Decider\,” 2005’s “I’m Swiss\,” as well as the hilarious\, “Bill Maher … But I’m Not Wrong\,” – have been nominated for Emmy awards. \nMaher was born in New York City\, raised in River Vale\, N.J. and went to Cornell University. SUMMARY:Walter Trout
DESCRIPTION:Walter Trout\nThe Mary Seaton Room\nSeptember 18th\, 7 PM\nWith Opening Act: The Girls of Grosh \nKleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Walter Trout to the Mary Seaton Room on Sunday\, September 18th at 7 pm\, with opening act: the Girls of Grosh. \nWALTER TROUT has been nothing short of prolific over the course of his seven decades on this Earth.  He’s set to release his 29th solo album over a career that has spanned the globe\, and delivered notoriety as one of the great purveyors of the blues and blues rock.  Trout’s history is equal parts thriller\, romance\, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks\, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph\, offset by wilderness years\, brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion\, and the survival of an organ transplant few come back from.  From 1973\, when he left his New Jersey home headed to Los Angeles\, he has followed a road that afforded him an opportunity to just play\, sharing the stage as a sideman with Jesse Ed Davis\, Big Mama Thornton\, John Lee Hooker\, Lowell Fulson\, Joe Tex\, and of course the great John Mayall (following a three-year tenure in Canned Heat).   \nWhen Trout walked away from the Bluesbreakers\, he embarked on a solo career that has yielded a catalogue that has established a deep legacy in the world of Blues\, Americana\, and the realm of revered singer-songwriters. While many would slow down as they approach their 70th birthday\, Trout continues to deliver inspired recordings\, performances\, and a voice that articulates relevant ideology and insights in to The World that inspires his deep perspective. There’s no autopilot emanating from Walter Trout\, but a true a sense of growing momentum\, elements of surprise\, and repertoire that continues to be more compelling with each new creation.

SUMMARY:The Marcel Tyberg Legacy Concert: Piano and Vocal Music
DESCRIPTION:Florestan Recital Project\nAaron Engebreth\, baritone\nAlison D’Amato\, piano \nFlorestan Recital Project presents a program of piano and vocal works by composer and Holocaust victim Marcel Tyberg. This concert is FREE to attend – click here to reserve tickets.\nProgram\nMarcel Tyberg (1893-1944) \nHeine Liederzyklus (1925-26)\, Selections from 21 songs for voice and piano; poetry by Heinrich Heine\nAaron Engebreth\, baritone\nAlison D’Amato\, piano \nPiano Sonata No. 1 (1914-1920)\, movements 1 and 2\n1. Allegro appasionato\n2. Tema con variazioni \nSponsored by the Marcel Tyberg Legacy Fund at the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. \nPromotional support provided by: \n \n\n\n\nMarcel Tyberg and the BPO\nAfter decades of obscurity\, a composer and Holocaust victim is getting his due. \nMarcel Tyberg (1893-1944) lived in Abbazia\, Italy in the mid-20th century. He was known in the community for the compositions he wrote for local dance bands and for his prowess as a teacher. But his true passion was composing classical music. When his teaching and his commercial work were finished\, he’d turn his attention to his beloved symphonies\, sonatas\, and trios. \nAs World War II intensified\, Tyberg feared persecution due to his Jewish ancestry. He delivered his classical scores to a student and trusted friend\, Henry Mihich. Shortly afterwards\, Tyberg’s worst fears were realized. He was taken to Auschwitz\, where he died in 1944. \nMihich left Italy for America several years later\, and took the bag of scores with him. He settled in Buffalo and became a respected researcher and Director of the Grace Cancer Drug Center at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. For decades\, he visited each music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and many of the guest conductors\, trying to interest someone in bringing to light the works of his former teacher and friend. It was not until JoAnn Falletta’s tenure that he succeeded. \n“I discovered a treasure — music that\, while honoring the past Germanic tradition\, pointed the way to a new era. The language was strong\, individual and compelling\,” said Falletta of her initial review of the scores. It was enough to convince her that the painstaking project of transcribing and copying the handwritten scores to create playable versions was worth the effort. \nThe BPO committed to a multi-year recording project of Tyberg’s works on the international NAXOS label. The orchestra partnered with the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies which maintains a special fund\, The Marcel Tyberg Musical Legacy Fund\, to support the preservation\, performance\, recording and publishing of the works of Marcel Tyberg. \nRecorded in 2008-2009\, the BPO’s first Tyberg recording included his Symphony No. 3 led by JoAnn Falletta\, and his Piano Trio\, performed by violinist Michael Ludwig\, cellist Roman Mekinulov\, and pianist Ya-Fung Chuang. As the first Tyberg recording was released\, word began to spread. The project was reviewed and profiled in many major publications\, and the BPO began receiving requests from groups all over the world who wished to perform Tyberg’s works. But the most remarkable request came from a surprising source. \n“Just as we were preparing for the release of our second Tyberg CD\, we received a startling communication from the government of Croatia. Abbazia\, now called Opatija\, had been part of Italy in Tyberg’s lifetime\, and is now in Croatia. The Croatians\, excited by hearing our first Tyberg CD\, were claiming him as their national composer\,” Falletta said. \nIn November 2012\, a Tyberg festival was held in Rijeka and attended by the president of Croatia. Just prior to the festival\, the nationally syndicated radio program Performance Today broadcast the story of Marcel Tyberg and the BPO to more than 1.3 million listeners across the United States. At the festival\, JoAnn Falletta conducted Croatia’s National Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Tyberg’s Symphony No. 2. Dr. Mihich\, BPO board member Cindy Abbott Letro\, and Peter Fleischmann of the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies\, were there to witness the fulfillment of their dream to bring recognition to a great man who had lived a quiet life and died a lonely death. \nThe second Tyberg recording was recorded in 2011 and released on the NAXOS label in August 2013. The recording featured his Symphony No. 2 conducted by JoAnn Falletta and his Piano Sonata No. 2 performed by pianist Fabio Bidini. It was Naxos’ best-selling new release on the week of its debut and has received acclaim from international publications. Although the Nazis succeeded in ending Marcel Tyberg’s life\, they could not silence his voice. \n\n\nAbout Florestan Recital Project\n\n\nFlorestan Recital Project engages audiences and artists in a broad spectrum of art song collaborations through performances\, recordings\, and mentoring. We are named for the fiery character of Florestan\, one of the creative alter egos of composer Robert Schumann\, who wrote of a basic mission: “to be remindful of older times and their works and to emphasize that only from such a pure source can new artistic beauties be fostered.” That message is at the center of our activities\, generating projects that draw connections between art song of the past\, present\, and future. \nSince 2001\, Florestan has produced an array of recitals\, festivals\, and innovative performances of classical music for audiences from coast to coast. In 2008\, Florestan Records was launched\, initiating a varied and critically acclaimed catalog of world premiere art song recordings\, many of which are available for free through streaming web audio. By offering a free\, simple and user-friendly online platform for our recordings\, Florestan offers professionally-produced releases that are accompanied by carefully researched program notes\, biographical information on the composer and poets\, as well as full texts and translations. We believe these works should be freely accessible to all audiences. \n\n\nAbout Aaron Engebreth\n\nAaron Engebreth enjoys a varied solo career in opera\, oratorio\, recital and devotes considerable energy to the performance of established music and contemporary premieres\, frequently collaborating with many of today’s preeminent composers. He is twice GRAMMY-Award nominated for Best Operatic Recording for his featured roles with the Boston Early Music Festival Opera and Radio Bremen.  In the U.S. he is frequently featured as a guest soloist on stages from Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center and Boston’s Symphony Hall\, to international appearances from Sapporo Japan’s Kitara Hall to Le Theatre de la Ville in Paris and the AmBul festival of Sofia\, Bulgaria. He has been a guest of the Tanglewood\, Ravinia\, Rockport and Monadnock Music Festivals as well as many of the country’s fine symphony orchestras. His recent New York City Opera debut as monodrama soloist in Argento’s A Waterbird Talk performed at Carnegie Hall\, compelled the New York Classical Review to state\, “Engebreth is a marvelous actor\, capable of holding his character’s many facets and motivations in tension.”\n\n\nAs a recording artist\, Mr. Engebreth is featured on over 25 commercially released recordings from the baroque to modern premieres\, many with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.  He produced and recorded The Complete Songs of Virgil Thomson with Florestan Recital Project and New World Records\, which is garnering international acclaim. Other releases include the world premiere of the Six Early Songs of Samuel Barber and Libby Larsen’s The Peculiar Case of Dr. H. H. Holmes\, both for Florestan Records and Jon Deak’s The Passion of Scrooge with the Firebird Ensemble. \n\n\nAbout Alison d’Amato\n\nPianist Alison d’Amato (she/they) has been working in vocal and instrumental genres for more than twenty-five years as a collaborative pianist\, teacher\, and music director. Known as a trailblazer in the field of art song\, she directs her passion for song’s rich history towards generating new music and merging its past with its present. In all her activities\, Dr. d’Amato is dedicated to energizing relationships in music and bringing student’s love for their art to the forefront of their projects.\n\n\nAlison has long explored projects that promote interdisciplinary collaborations and new approaches to the performer-audience relationship. In 2003\, she became Artistic Co-Director of Florestan Recital Project\, one of the earliest organizations to champion art song performances\, recordings\, and mentoring. Alison is currently Program Co-Director of “(art) Song Lab\,” a unique collaborative intensive which brings together writers\, composers\, and performers to create new art songs. \nDr. d’Amato’s breadth of artistic experience has made her a valued partner in creative projects and an effective leader in several organizations. In 2017\, she joined ArtsBridge as Co-Creator & Faculty for the Artsbridge Summer Art Song program\, a college audition preparatory program for high school students that includes courses in song repertoire\, poetry\, performance masterclasses\, and vocal coaching. She taught for more than 10 years at University at Buffalo\, ultimately serving as Director of Music Theatre in 2021-2022. Dr. d’Amato was most recently appointed Associate Professor of Vocal Coaching and Coordinator of Vocal Coaching at Eastman School of Music\, beginning Fall 2022.
