SUMMARY:Cherish the Ladies "A Celtic Christmas"
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nCherish the Ladies “A Celtic Christmas”\nDecember 1st\, 2023\, 8 PM\nThe Mary Seaton Room\, Kleinhans Music Hall \nOne of the most engaging and successful ensembles in the history of Celtic music\, Cherish The Ladies have shared timeless Irish traditions with audiences worldwide for over thirty years. In their Celtic Christmas program\, the Ladies put their signature mark on classic carols such as “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night\,” in arrangements that highlight the group’s unique Celtic instrumentation\, beautiful harmonies\, and spectacular step dancing. Hailed by The New York Times as “passionate\, tender and rambunctious\,” Cherish The Ladies have released three critically acclaimed holiday albums\, On Christmas Night\, A Star In The East\, and 2015’s Christmas In Ireland. \nAbout Cherish the Ladies\n“It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do\,” says The Boston Globe of Cherish The Ladies\, Grammy Award nominated Irish-American supergroup that formed in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Celtic music scene. Cherish The Ladies has shared timeless Irish traditions and good cheer with audiences worldwide for decades. They’ve brought their signature blend of virtuosic instrumental talents\, beautiful vocals\, and stunning step dancing to the White House\, the Olympics\, and to PBS with their television special\, An Irish Homecoming\, which received an Emmy Award. The Washington Post praises the “astonishing array of virtuosity” that Cherish The Ladies bring to the stage on a regular basis. Their latest album\, Heart of the Home\, embraces the gift of music passed down from generations. “It was the greatest gift they could give us\,” says bandleader Joanie Madden. “We’re carrying on the music of our fathers.” As their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continues to grow\, Cherish The Ladies blazes forward into another decade of music making. \nUnder the leadership  of All-Ireland flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden\, named by The Irish Voice Newspaper as one of the Top 25 most influential Irish Americans of the past quarter century\, these ladies create an evening that includes a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents\, beautiful vocals\, captivating arrangements\, and stunning step dancing. Their continued success as one of the top Celtic groups in the world is due to the ensemble’s ability to take the best of Irish traditional music and dance and put it forth in an immensely entertaining show. \nThe  New  York  Times  calls   their   music   “passionate\,   tender\,   and   rambunctious\,”   and  the Washington  Post praises  their  “astonishing   array   of   virtuosity.”   They’ve   won recognition as the BBC’s Best Musical Group of the Year and named Top North American Celtic Group at the Irish Music Awards and not to mention having a street named after them in the Bronx! They’ve collaborated with such musicians as The Boston Pops\, The Clancy Brothers\, the Chieftains\, Vince Gill\, Nanci Griffith\, Pete Seeger\, Don Henley\,  Arlo Guthrie and Maura O’Connell as well as being the featured soloist with over 280 nights of symphony orchestras. \nThe level of artistic\, historic\, and purely enticing entertainment is unlike any in its genre. As their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continue to grow\, Cherish The Ladies blazes forward into another decade of music-making. \nJOANIE MADDEN Born in New York of Irish parents and raised in a musical household\, her mother hails from Miltown Malbay\, County Clare and her father Joe\, an All-Ireland Champion accordion player was a native of Portumna\, County Galway. At a very early age\, Joanie was exposed to the finest Irish traditional music listening to her father and his friends play music at family gatherings and social events. She began taking lessons from legendary flutist and National Heritage Award winner Jack Coen\, and within a few short years\, she had achieved great success winning the world championship in Irish music on both the concert flute and tin whistle. During that time\, Joanie also became the first American to win the coveted Senior All- Ireland Championship on the whistle. \nMadden has sold over 500\,000 solo albums and has performed on over 200 recordings\, including three Grammy-winning albums running the gamut from Pete Seeger and Sinead O’Connor to the Boston Pops. Throughout her musical career\, she has amassed a plethora of awards and citations. Her merits include being the youngest member inducted into both the Irish-American Musicians Hall of Fame and the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Hall of Fame\, she was chosen for the Wild Geese award\, where she joined an impressive list of previous honorees\, including: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt\, Tony award winning playwright Brian Friel\, Nobel prize laureate Seamus Heaney and Irish dance sensation\, Michael Flatley. Irish America Magazine selected her twice as one of the Top 100 Irish-Americans in the United States and she was also named Traditional Musician of the Year by the Irish Voice newspaper\, all for her contributions to promoting and preserving Irish culture in the United States. In 2010\, Joanie was forever immortalized on the streets of her native Bronx when a street was named after her on the Grand Concourse: “Joanie Madden and Cherish the Ladies”. In 2011\, she was bestowed one of the nation’s highest awards as she was chosen for the Ellis Island Medal of Honor\, joining an illustrious list of distinguished American citizens\, including six United States Presidents as well as Ambassadors\, Senators\, Congressmen and Supreme Court Justices\, all singled out for their exemplary service to the United States. In 2012\, she was a recipient of the esteemed USA Artist Fellowship grant\, singled out as one of the most innovative and influential artists in America\, becoming the first Irish traditional musician to do so. In 2016\, Irish America Magazine named Joanie as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Irish Women in the world. \nMARY COOGAN was born in New York and raised in a musical household. She is a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. Her mother came from Castlerea in County Roscommon and her father Jim was a great accordion player whose parents emigrated from County Waterford. Her father passed down his love of Irish music to Mary and she became a self-taught guitar\, mandolin and bouzouki player. In addition to her outstanding musical talents\, Mary also holds her masters degree in education and was named in Who’s Who among American Teachers. She has a number of recordings including a beautiful solo album entitled; “Christmas” and also one with her father called “Passing Time”\, but her close ties to children pushed her to make a wonderful collection of music with her great friend Kathy Ludlowe for our young fans entitled\, “The Big Ship Sails.” She continues to teach music to children in New York and is a highly sought-after accompanist. Acoustic Guitar Magazine named Mary one of the top four Celtic guitarists in Celtic music. \nMIRELLA MURRAY grew up in Claddaghduff on the northwest coast of Connemara in County Galway. Her father John Joe\, a notable sean nós dancer\, came from Inishark Island and had a deep understanding and love for traditional music. Mirella studied the piano accordion with Mary Finn and it was at music classes that she met up with fiddler Liz Kane from Letterfrack. Mirella won the accordion All-Ireland championship and duet All-Ireland championship with Liz Kane. \nMirella teamed up with the great fiddle player Tola Custy from Co. Clare and they recorded\, “Three Sunsets”\, which was voted one of the top five albums of the year by The Irish Times Newspaper. Mirella performed at the International Women’s Day Festival in Moscow; was featured in the Galway Arts Festival and toured Austria\, Scandinavia\, Switzerland\, Spain\, and France. She was a featured soloist in the off-Broadway production of the late Johnny Cunningham’s theatrical production\, “Peter & Wendy”\, an adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan” which garnished two OBIE Awards. \nMirella also has an incredible flair for teaching\, and it is a credit to her musicianship that twenty-two of her pupils have gained All-Ireland titles. She has accumulated a vast store of tunes from her travels\, and musicians such as Sharon Shannon\, Lunasa and the Bumblebees credit her as a source for many uncommon melodies. \nKATHLEEN BOYLE from Glasgow\, Scotland comes from a family steeped in the traditional music of Donegal. Her father Hughie is a talented musician and handed down his love of music to her. Kathleen is a talented pianist and accordion player and has won All-Scotland and All-Britain titles on both instruments. \nIn 1999\, Kathleen made history as the first graduate to gain a degree in traditional music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She is in great demand as a teacher and lecturer on both accordion and piano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama\, the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music and The Irish Academy of World Music in Limerick University. \nShe has performed at Holyrood Palace for His Royal Highness Prince Charles and for Irish President Mary McAleese; Kathleen’s travels with Cherish the Ladies and Dochas have taken her around the world with tours of the UK\, Spain\, France\, Ireland\, Italy\, Denmark\, Austria\, Germany\, Sweden\, America\, Canada and China. Dochas was voted best newcomers at the 2004 Scots Traditional Music Awards and nominated as best folk band in 2006. Kathleen’s first solo album “An Cailin Rua” or “The Red Haired Girl” was released to rave reviews in 2008. Her latest recording\, “Back to Donegal”\, is an album she recorded with her father and family members. \nNOLLAIG CASEY is one of Ireland’s most gifted musicians\, with her own unique way of playing traditional Irish music on the fiddle and has such a distinctive sound that it would be impossible to mistake it for that of anyone else. This “sound” is so attractive to other musicians that there exists hardly any major Irish artist of the last thirty years with whom she has not worked – and many international artists have been equally entranced. \nA graduate from University College Cork with a Bachelors in Music Degree at the exceptionally early age of nineteen\, she embarked upon a professional career first joining the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra where she remained for three years until she joined the ground breaking Irish band\, Planxty. \nIn addition to her work with Cherish the Ladies\, Nollaig has recorded and worked with Enya\, Van Morrison\, Sinéad O’Connor\, Nanci Griffith\, Ricky Skaggs\, Rod Stewart\, Dónal Lunny\, Mary Black\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, Carlos Nuñez\, Jim Rooney\, Andy Irvine\, Moving Hearts\, The Indigo Girls\, Spandau Ballet\, Christy Moore\, Liam O’Flynn\, Dan ar Bras\, Sharon Shannon\, Maura O’Connell\, Dick Gaughan\, Paddy Keenan\, Máirtín O’Connor. He hails from Galway City and the clarity and richness of his voice and the emotion with which he delivers his songs\, has been compared with the best ballad singers that Ireland has ever produced. Don’s award winning debut solo album “Start of a Dream” was released in 2006 to critical acclaim and his version of Richard Thompsons classic song\, “Dimming of the Day” won vocal cut of the year from the 2010 Live Ireland awards. His passionate singing and majestic voice guarantees a most impressive performance in front of a live audience as those who have seen him perform in Ireland\, Europe and the USA can attest to. 2011 was a year to remember for Don\, as he was one of the finalists in one of Ireland most watched TV programs\, The All Ireland Talent Show. His continued popularity and support from viewers provided him with many weeks of performing to live audiences of up to 800\,000 tuning in weekly. Irish American super group; Cherish The Ladies invited Don to join them on their summer tour of Ireland and Scotland and also further touring consisting of 18 States in America as part of their Christmas Tour. The band’s leader Joanie Madden introduces Stiffe as\, “One of the greatest singers Ireland has ever produced”. In December 2011 Don released his second album “Lifes Journey” and one of Don’s own songs from that album\, Somebody Special\, was recently awarded Song of the Year from the Live Ireland Awards. Noted artists; Sean Keane\, Cherish the Ladies\, Kate Purcell and Matt Keane\, have also showed their respect for Don’s prowess as a songwriter and have covered his self-penned songs. \nDANCERS \nJASON OREMUS has been heavily involved in Irish dancing and the dance industry his entire life. After a short period of time\, he was invited to take over as the lead and to star as the principle male dancer. His travels as the principal dancer took him all around the globe where he performed to standing only crowds in over 30 countries. Jason has recently been developing a new concept of Irish dance that attempts to break the barriers and traditional restraints that have been placed on this engaging art form. \nGARRETT COLEMAN As a native of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, Garrett was trained in traditional Irish step dance at the Burke School under the tutelage of the internationally renowned Theresa Burke. Despite his traditional background\, Garrett has consistently found himself drawn to rhythmically innovative types of movement that push the boundaries of athleticism through dance. In addition to Irish Step\, he has trained in hip hop\, tap\, and contemporary movement. \nCompetitively\, Garrett was named the two-time World Champion (2004\, 2005) and All Ireland Champion (2004). He is also a nine-time Mid-American Champion and has held the North American title six times. In 2006\, he was a silver medalist and scholarship winner with the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts\, and was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Whenever she is taking a break from touring\, Julie teaches private dance and fiddle lessons to students at home and at music festivals.

The group stands out as an artistic project that highlights feminine poetry and voices. Creating an experience that connects the spectator with distinct emotions\, one is taken on voyage through multiple rhythms\, accompanied by traditional string instruments such as the harp and the jarana\, percussion and zapateado\, poetic improvisation in rhyme and the projection of visual effects. Offering an assortment of colors\, textures and images to diverse and multi-generational audiences\, the ensemble is defined by an original aesthetic concept that unites the traditional with the vanguard in a contemporary stage proposal. \n\n\n\n\n\nSince its formation in 2007\, the group has carried the seal of feminine strength and beauty within the traditionally masculine world of Mexican son. \nThe sounds of the strings interweave with the poetic messages written from a woman’s perspective\, creating a facet not before seen within this musical genre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe zapateado (percussive dance) on the tarima (wooden platform) accentuates the beat\, while the band’s colorful wardrobe embellishes their musicality. Appealing instrumental landscapes include the captivating vibrations of the horse jaw\, the profound and mystical harmonies of the harp\, the percussive atmosphere created by the jarana\, the robust rhythm of the guitarra grande\, and the renaissance-sounding bowed instruments created ex profeso for the group\, resurrecting extinct baroque instrumentation. \n \nThe tour for Caña Dulce y Caña Brava in the United States has been supported by the Mexican Minister of Culture and Ibermúsicas \nAbout Global Grooves \nThe Global Grooves music series\, aims to bridge cultures and ignite a shared passion for music.  Through captivating performances which highlight a variety of cultures\, it celebrates the rich tapestry of musical traditions from around the world\, fostering cross-cultural understanding\, appreciation\, and unity among the beautifully diverse community of WNY. Kleinhans’ commitment to artistic excellence and cultural exploration drove them to curate a concert experience that transcends boundaries and enriches the human spirit.

Choro[vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nAbout Bokyung Byun\nPraised by Classical Guitar Magazine as “confident and quite extraordinary\,” Korean guitarist\, Bokyung Byun enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after guitarists of her generation. Byun holds the distinction of being the first female winner of the prestigious JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition\, where Falletta herself described  Byun’s performance as “stunning\, showcasing her gorgeous tone\, immaculate technique\, and sophisticated musicianship.” This win is among many wherein Byun excelled in the competitive circuit\, including winning the grand prize at the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition\, known as the most prestigious guitar competition in the world. \nA bevy of orchestras\, festivals\, workshops\, and guitar societies look to Byun for solo performances and masterclasses. In recent seasons\, Byun has performed as a soloist with orchestras\, including the Buffalo Philharmonic\, the Utah Symphony\, West Los Angeles Symphony\, New Juilliard Ensemble\, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra\, among others. Her solo recital highlights include performances at the Kumho Young Artist Series\, Philadelphia Guitar Festival\, Aspen-Salida Concert Series\, Toronto Guitar Weekend\, Guitar Montréal\, Ellnora | The Guitar Festival\, and San Diego Guitar Festival. She was acclaimed for performing “eloquently through a diverse and challenging program\,” by Michelle Fratus\, president of the board of the Knoxville Guitar Society\, and having “confidence\, passion\, excellent projection and great dynamic contrast” by Heather Morand Clark\, president of the Guitar Society of Toronto. \nCommitted to expanding the role of a 21st-century musician\, Byun’s concert program often features contemporary music alongside traditional repertoire. As Byun herself says\, “it’s vital and exciting to audiences for concerts to join the new with the old. For guitar music to continue to grow\, I believe that new works must actively be cultivated in programming\, and it is my hope that audiences leave my performances with new experiences.” This skill at navigating both classic repertoire and fresh work has led her to co-found Sounding Board: The New Music Initiative for Guitarists and Composers. The project focuses on promoting collaborative relationships between composers and performers to create new works for guitar\, and its inaugural festival in Besançon\, France in 2019 has been praised as “extraordinary\, in the strict sense of the word\,” by La Presse de Gray in France. \nByun’s debut recording in 2020 has been praised by Soundboard Magazine as “a very beautiful disc. From the first notes of the “Gallarda” from Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Escarraman\, we are treated to extraordinary musicianship\, technical assurance\, and beauty of sound.” American Record Guide says “Byun’s interpretation enlivens them with creative phrasings\, articulations\, spacing\, and dynamics\, which take the listener beyond most performances I have heard.” \nBorn in Seoul\, Korea\, Byun began playing guitar at the age of six. At eleven\, she took the stage for her first solo recital\, leading to an early start in her teen years performing numerous concert tours around Korea\, to enthusiastic response\, including millions of views on YouTube. By her teen years\, she had gained national attention for first-prize finishes in three renowned competitions: the Korea Guitar Association\, the Music Association of Korea\, and the Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition. \nByun soon moved to the United States\, where she briefly studied in Los Angeles before moving to New York City\, where she entered The Juilliard School at the age of sixteen. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. She is grateful to the masterful instruction of her pedagogues\, who include Scott Tennant\, William Kanengiser\, Chen Zhi\, Tae-soo Kim\, and Sharon Isbin. \nIn 2020\, Byun co-founded Guitarlab which has provided an innovative online learning platform offering cutting-edge classes designed for young professionals around the world. Byun is currently on the guitar faculty of California State University Fullerton. She is sponsored by Augustine Strings and plays a guitar by Dieter Mueller (2019). In this edge-of-your-seat presentation\, Bryan shows you what it means to adventure with purpose\, and why he believes the best expeditions are the ones with a healthy chance of failure. He’s faced machete-wielding locals in Papua New Guinea\, suffered frostbite during the first-ever ice climb of Niagara Falls\, explored the South Pacific’s deepest canyons\, and scaled North America’s tallest mountains to bring you behind the scenes and capture the impossible. \nAbout \nPhoto by Mike McKay \nBryan Smith is an award-winning filmmaker based out of Squamish\, British Columbia. His first documentary\, 49 Megawatts\, received acclaim both for its amazing kayaking footage and insightful exploration of the controversy over British Columbia’s river-based energy production. With a knack for storytelling\, an ability to assemble great teams\, and an insane work ethic\, his client list has grown to include National Geographic\, Discovery\, Disney\, Red Bull\, Patagonia\, New Belgium Brewing\, Arcteryx\, and more. In 2010 he earned a National Geographic Expedition Grant for his work in Kamchatka\, Russia\, and launched into digital media\, co-producing and directing The Season web TV series. He has worked as both a Field Producer and Director of Photography for National Geographic Television on shows including Alaska Wing Men\, Explorer\, Nat Geo Amazing and Monster Fish. More recently\, he co-produced and directed The Man Who Can Fly\, a 60-minute special for the National Geographic Channel Explorer series. \nWith extensive experience on Red\, Alexa\, Phantom\, Sony F900\, Panasonic Varicam\, and just about every ENG camera platform\, his experience at getting cameras into difficult and remote locations makes him an incredible asset to any production. Label him jazz and he makes a funk record. Call him an R&B artist and he drops an acoustic jazz trio collection. Brand him pop and he creates a 32-minute New Age opus. And you’d be hard pressed to name another instrumentalist of his ilk who can mount an elaborately designed concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months. \nCulbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. “Long Night Out” landed him a lengthy record deal and signaled that a star was born. \nHis upcoming nationwide tour kicks off in 2023\, with a stop in BUFFALO\, NY ON SUNDAY\, MARCH 26\, 2023 at KLEINHANS MUSIC HALL! SUMMARY:Marcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nAcoustic Songs & Stories\nFeaturing\nMarcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis\nMary Seaton Room\, Kleinhans Music Hall\nTinsley Ellis and Marcia Ball are excited to present an intimate evening of their music and memories called Acoustic Songs and Stories. They will each play a set of their own songs.  Tinsley\, an elder statesman of the Blues world\, will perform many of his most popular songs from his twenty albums\, plus some delta blues and classics on his National Steel and Martin acoustic guitars.  Marcia\, a five-time Grammy nominee\, will play the piano and sing her often raucous and sometimes touching original songs full of the characters and places that shaped her.  They will weave the music together with stories from their years on stage and on the road.  Finally\, they will come together as a duo to close the night playing songs together and swapping tales of their travels and travails.  \nAbout Marcia Ball\n“Fifty years have passed in a flash\,” says pianist\, songwriter\, and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career.  Ball\, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year\, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse party every time she takes the stage. Born in Orange\, Texas and raised in Vinton\, Louisiana\, her deep Acadian heritage and a lifetime of absorbing Gulf Coast rhythm and blues is evident in her original songs and the classics she chooses to cover.  This has made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world.  With each new release\, her reputation as a profoundly soulful singer\, a boundlessly talented pianist and a courageous\, inventive songwriter continues to grow. Her love of the road has led to years of soul-satisfying performances at festivals\, concert halls and clubs. \nIn Marcia’s most recent album\, Shine Bright\, she has put together the most musically substantial\, hopeful and uplifting set of songs of her five-decade career.  Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) and recorded in Texas and Louisiana\, Shine Bright contains twelve songs (including eight originals)\, ranging from the title track’s rousing appeal for public and private acts of courage to the upbeat call to action of Pots And Pans\, a song inspired by renowned Texas political writer and humorist Molly Ivins.  From the humorous advice of Life Of The Party to the poignantly optimistic World Full Of Love\, the intensity of Ball’s conviction never wavers while\, simultaneously\, the fun never stops.  “It is a ridiculously hopeful\, cheerful record\,” she says\, in light of some of the album’s more serious subject matter.  The secret\, according to Ball “is to set the political songs to a good dance beat.” \n“A welcome ray of sunshine…Ball is a killer pianist\, a great singer and songwriter. Potent blues\, sweet zydeco\, soulful\, fast and furious Texas boogie…heartfelt\, powerful and righteous.” – Billboard \nMarcia grew up in a family whose female members all played piano and she began taking lessons at age five\, playing old Tin Pan Alley and popular music tunes from her grandmother’s collection.  But it wasn’t until she was 13 that Marcia discovered the power of soul music.  One day in 1962\, she sat amazed as Irma Thomas performed on a show at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans and delivered the most spirited and moving performance the young teenager had ever seen.  A few years later she attended Louisiana State University and after dropping out to explore the brave new hippie world of the late 1960s\, she was invited to try out for a blues-based rock band called Gum.  She made the cut and her future was set. \nIn 1970\, Ball left Baton Rouge for San Francisco.  Her car broke down in Austin\, and while waiting for repairs she fell in love with the city and decided to stay.  It wasn’t long before she was performing in local clubs with a band called Freda And The Firedogs\, a group that pioneered the Progressive Country movement\, which attracted many musicians and significant media attention to Austin.   It was around this time that she discovered Professor Longhair\, the seminal New Orleans piano player.  “Once I found out about Professor Longhair\,” recalls Ball\, “I knew I had found my direction.” \n“Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky\, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.” – The New York Times \nWhen Freda And The Firedogs broke up in 1974\, Ball launched her solo career and began touring outside of Texas and Louisiana.  She signed with Capitol Records in 1977\, debuting with the country-rock album Circuit Queen.  As she created and honed her own sound\, she released six critically acclaimed titles on the Rounder Records label during the 1980s and 1990s.  In 1990\, Ball—collaborating with Angela Strehli and Lou Ann Barton—recorded the hugely successful Dreams Come True on the Antone’s label.  At the end of 1997\, Marcia finished work on a similar “three divas of the blues” project for Rounder\, this time in the distinguished company of Tracy Nelson and her longtime inspiration\, Irma Thomas.  The CD\, Sing It!\, was released in 1998 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. \nMarcia Ball has appeared many times on national television over the years\, including the PBS special In Performance At The White House along with B.B. King and Della Reese\, Austin City Limits and HBO’s Treme.  She performed in Piano Blues\, the film directed by Clint Eastwood included in Martin Scorsese’s The Blues series which aired on PBS television nationwide in 2003.  Marcia also appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman with The New Orleans Social Club\, where she not only reached millions of people\, but also helped to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.  In 2012\, she had a role in the independent film Angels Sing starring Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.  In 2017 she performed on NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas\, live from The Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. \nBall joined Alligator Records in 2001 with the release of the critically acclaimed Presumed Innocent.  The CD won the 2002 Blues Music Award for Blues Album Of The Year.  Her follow-up\, So Many Rivers\, was nominated for a Grammy Award\, and won the 2004 Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year as well as the coveted Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year award.  Her next release\, Live! Down The Road\, released in 2005\, also garnered a Grammy nomination\, as did 2008’s Peace\, Love & BBQ (the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart).  She holds eleven Blues Music Awards\, ten Living Blues Awards\, and five Grammy Award nominations.  2010’s Grammy-nominated Roadside Attractions and 2014’s The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man successfully grew her fan base even further. \nShe has been inducted into both the Gulf Coast Music Hall Of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.  The Texas State legislature named her the official 2018 Texas State Musician.  In 2018\, Marcia was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. \n“She’s as perfect as an artist can be.” – The Houston Chronicle \nSince March of 2020 and the onset of the COVID pandemic and subsequent lock-down\, Marcia has filled her time with work on a nonprofit organization she co-founded called HOME – Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers\, which pays rent and utilities for older musicians in the Austin area.  HOMEaustin.org.  She also improved her streaming and virtual performance abilities enough to participate in many on-line fundraising efforts throughout the year.  She put her domestic skills to work making masks.  She and her husband Gordon got a dog to replace their dear Lily.  She has written songs and  she is collaborating on a musical play which she hopes becomes a real live show in the near future. \nAnd she’s getting the band ready to get back out on the road.  “I still love the feel of the wheels rolling\,” she says\, “and the energy in a room full of people ready to go wherever it is we take them.” \n  \nAbout Tinsley Ellis\n Georgia troubadour Tinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his whole life. Born in Atlanta 1957 and raised in southern Florida\, he acquired his first guitar at age seven\, inspired by seeing The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like many kids his age\, Ellis discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds\, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like the Allman Brothers Band. 20 albums (and millions of miles traveled) later on record labels such as Alligator and Capricorn\, Ellis has become an elder statesman of the blues world. \nWith his new project Tinsley Ellis – Acoustic Songs And Stories\, Ellis performs many of his most popular songs (plus delta blues and classics by artists like Gregg Allman\, Bob Dylan and Leo Kottke) on his 1937 National Steel and 1969 Martin D-35. Ellis weaves the music together with interesting and sometimes ribald stories from over 40 years of a life spent on stages and in motels and truck stops. Ellis shows no signs of slowing down and is headed your way with his newest and perhaps most unique project.

SUMMARY:NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE | Sandesh Kadur: Wild Cats of India
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Sandesh Kadur as part of the National Geographic Live 2023 series! New for this season\, the series will take place in the main auditorium at Kleinhans so audiences can enjoy the cushy seats\, the wonderful ambiance and reserve their seats in advance! \nPhoto by Sandesh Kadur \nSandesh Kadur first encountered a wild cat in his native India as a teenager—after sitting in a tree for hours under a full moon\, a leopard walked directly under him. The experience sparked a fascination that led him to spend his career documenting the country’s unmatched diversity of wild cats. With landscapes spanning the towering Himalaya\, arid plains\, and dense jungles\, India is home to 15 species of wild cats\, more than any other country in the world. While many of its big cats are well known and thoroughly documented\, Kadur is on a mission to highlight the country’s lesser-known felines in order to protect their future. \nFinding and filming India’s often elusive small cats challenges Kadur’s patience\, natural history knowledge\, and skills as a photographer and filmmaker. He traveled to remote villages in the frigid Himalaya in search of the grumpy-faced Pallas’s cat\, whose tiny size made it extraordinarily difficult to track. His pursuit of a fishing cat\, which jumps into water to catch its prey and has learned to thrive alongside human habitation\, brought him to one of India’s most densely populated regions. And he spent years attempting to capture images of the mysterious clouded leopard\, considered the evolutionary link between big and small cats\, in the wild.  \nThrough Kadur’s captivating images and video\, get an up-close look at a world of wild cats you’ve never seen before. \nAbout\nPhoto by Felis Images \nBAFTA Award-winning filmmaker and National Geographic Fellow Sandesh Kadur creates documentary films that have aired worldwide on prominent networks such as National Geographic\, the BBC\, Netflix\, Discovery Channel\, and Animal Planet. He is a Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers. Through the use of images both still and moving\, Kadur hopes to harness the power of nature education as a catalyst for long-term change. His goal is to inspire his audience to protect and appreciate what remains of our wilderness. He is also the Founder/Director of Felis Creations – a media and visual arts company based in Bangalore that focuses on creating content that inspires conservation. \nKadur’s work spans from the elusive snow leopard in the Himalaya to the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the endangered Kemp’s Ridley turtles in Mexico. He is the producer of a three-part docuseries for National Geographic titled “Wild Cats of India” and “India’s Wild Leopards.” He is also the co-author of two books: Sahyadris: India’s Western Ghats—A Vanishing Heritage (2005) and Himalaya—Mountains of Life (2013). His first documentary\, Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon (2002)\, which was accompanied by his first book\, earned critical acclaim while drawing attention to one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots and helped convince UNESCO to name the Western Ghats a World Heritage Site in 2012. \nPhoto by Felis Images \nKadur’s work has won a slew of prestigious international awards\, including a 2017 EMMY nomination and the 2017 BAFTA Award for his work on BBC’s Planet Earth II. In 2013\, he received the Nature’s Best Windland Smith Rice Award and the North American Nature Photographers (NANPA) Vision Award in recognition of early career excellence and continuation of vision and inspiration to others in nature photography\, conservation\, and education. He has also won the International Conservation Photographer Award (2012)\, CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year (2008)\, Gold REMI Award for Creative Excellence (2008)\, multiple International Wildlife Film Festival Merit awards\, and was nominated twice for a Green Oscar at the Wildscreen Film Festival\, among many other awards and nominations.  \nKadur hopes that his photographs and documentaries will reveal places and species people rarely see and will inspire new passion to protect them. \n  \nThank you to our sponsors!\nLead Sponsors:\n   \nPromotional Sponsors:

SUMMARY:Art of Jazz | Elio Villafranca & The Chick Corea Afro-Caribbean Experience
DESCRIPTION:Elio Villafranca & The Chick Corea Afro-Caribbean Experience – Sold Out!\nSunday\, February 5 at 3 pm\nChick Corea was quoted in a 2019 Billboard interview as saying\, “That [Latin] flavor\, I find\, is mostly in everything I do; it’s a part of me.” As we celebrate jazz icon Chick Corea\, who tragically passed away in February 2021\, Grammy Nominated Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca will delve into the maestro’s compositions from a distinctly Afro-Caribbean meets Jazz perspective\, joined by a sextet of master musicians including Grammy winner saxophonist Donny McCaslin. When Jazz at Lincoln Center hosted a week-long Chick Corea Festival in 2013\, Chick hand-picked the musicians he wanted to see and hear\, with Elio Villafranca being one of them. Chick’s masterful storytelling knew no bounds—from Bach and Bartok to the Blues\, from Stravinsky to Samba\, Mozart to Montunos\, Ravel and Rhumba—all tempered with the language of swing with the Spanish Tinge.  The Chick Corea Afro-Caribbean Experience musical arrangements have only been performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center during two special Chick Corea tribute engagements. This concert will be a one-time only special command performance in Buffalo! \nSubscribe and save! SUMMARY:CANCELED -- Habib Koité and Bamada
DESCRIPTION:Due to the impending weather situation and the difficult travel conditions that may arise from it\, tonight’s concert at Kleinhans Music Hall featuring Habib Koité and Bamada has unfortunately been canceled. All tickets will be refunded in full. Please contact the Box Office with any questions at (716) 885-5000.\n\nKleinhans Music Hall is pleased to welcome Habib Koité and Bamada\, with opening act the African American Cultural Center Dance and Drummer Company\, to the Mary Seaton Room on Thursday\, November 17th at 7:30 PM. \nOne of Africa’s most popular and recognized musicians\, Habib Koité is a modern troubadour with extraordinary appeal because Koité’s musicianship\, wit and wisdom translate across cultures. Hailing from the musically prolific West African nation of Mali\, the guitarist and composer has been named the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone. Over the past decade\, his artistry and magnetic personality have made him an international star\, delighting audiences the world over\, and placing him firmly among the leading figures in contemporary world music. Bonnie Raitt proclaims\, “first there was Hendrix\, then Stevie Ray\, and now Habib.” \nHabib’s much-anticipated new release\, Kharifa\, was recorded entirely in Bamako. The sound of Mali\, its rich and diversified musical traditions\, and its instruments permeate the music of this superb project. It can be said that the Malian guitarist has matured\, evolved\, while once again successfully keeping one foot firmly anchored in the past. The original compositions and covers that form the backbone of this new album reflect the griot’s open spirit\, his willingness to travel through the rich Malian heritage while building the foundations of a resolutely modern music\, also influenced by Western rock and folk. \nOften compared to Eric Clapton\, the Malian reveals himself to be closer to a JJ Cale\, in his manner of occupying space with the guitar\, playing the note rather than notes\, allowing arpeggios to flow through the percussion\, caressing while directing with true virtuosity\, the rhythmic breath of each track on the album. \nHabib Koité takes his time. \nThis shows in his interest and involvement in everyday life in Bamako. Without ever denying the problems that plague his city and country – pollution\, poverty\, idleness\, insalubrity\, disease – Habib remains resolutely optimistic\, hopeful\, fighting against intolerance\, ignorance and obscurantism. While Mandé talks about reconciliation\, Kharifa calls for accountability of each individual. “Life is a daily struggle” he sings. \n  \nThanks to our Promotional Partner\, The African American Cultural Center.
