SUMMARY:Buffalo Chamber Music Society | Schumann Quartet
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Buffalo Chamber Music Society presents the Schumann Quartet at Kleinhans Music Hall. \nThe Schumann Quartet’s name has nothing to do with the 19th century composer Robert Schumann. The ensemble was named for Mark\, Erik and Ken Schumann\, three brothers from a hyper-musical family who have been playing together since childhood and decided to continue doing so as adults. Completing the quartet is the violist Liisa Randalu\, who was born in Estonia and grew up in Germany.  The Guardian said the quartet “combined probing intensity with wit and energy\, and a wonderful alertness to shifts of mood.” They will perform three classics\, Beethoven’s Quartet in A major\, Op.18\, No.5\, Ravel’s Quartet in F Major and Brahms’s Quartet in A minor\, Op.51\, No.2.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”black”][vc_column_text] \nProgram\nBEETHOVEN  Quartet in A major\, Op.18\, No.5\nRAVEL  Quartet in F major\nINTERMISSION\nBRAHMS  Quartet in A minor\, Op.51\, No.2[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”black”][vc_column_text] \nAbout the Schumann Quartet\nErik Schumann\, violin\nKen Schumann\, violin\nLiisa Randalu\, viola\nMark Schumann\, cello \nThe Schumann Quartet has reached a stage where anything is possible\, because it has dispensed with certainties. This also has consequences for audiences\, which from one concert to the next have to be prepared for all eventualities: “A work really develops only in a live performance\,” the quartet says. “That is ‘the real thing’\, because we ourselves never know what will happen. On the stage\, all imitation disappears\, and you automatically become honest with yourself. Then you can create a bond with the audience – communicate with it in music.” This live situation will gain an added energy in the near future: Sabine Meyer\, Menahem Pressler\, Andreas Ottensamer and Anna Lucia Richter are among the quartet’s current partners. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Liminal Space Ensemble | Centerstage Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Kleinhans Music Hall welcomes Liminal Space Ensemble as part of the Centerstage Concert Series on Tuesday\, November 9 at 7pm. The evening’s program will consist of four world premieres written for Liminal Space Ensemble by composers Charles Burns\, Evan Courtin\, Dan Langa\, and Kyle Miller.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text] \nAbout Liminal Space Ensemble\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The word liminal comes from the Latin word limen\, meaning threshold – any point or place of entering or beginning. A liminal space is the time between the ‘what was’ and the ‘next.’ It is a place of transition\, waiting\, and not knowing. Classical music audiences have been dwindling for generations due to loss of interest in 2021’s fast paced world. Liminal Space Ensemble leans into this rapid change and offers a new model for enjoying classical music with the belief that the future of our industry is in reflecting programming choices for diverse audiences\, and showing that classical music is by and for everyone. \nBased in Buffalo\, NY\, Liminal Space Ensemble was founded in August 2019 by Nicole Murray (flute) and Hope Wilk (harp) and features a core artist lineup of the top chamber musicians in the area; Nicole Murray (flute)\, Josh Lauretig (oboe)\, Michael Tumiel (clarinet)\, Hope Wilk (harp)\, Madeline Olsen (harp)\, Mikyung Kim (piano)\, Juan Herrera (percussion)\, John Smigielski (percussion)\, Evan Courtin (violin)\, Shannon Reilly (violin)\, Isabel Ong (violin)\, Bob Donowick (viola)\, Alex Cousins (cello)\, Katie Weissman (cello)\, Jonathan Borden (bass)\, and Tom Torissi (guitar). When not performing with LSE\, members can be found performing with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, Buffalo Chamber Players\, and several other prestigious ensembles. LSE’s musicians represent the top music conservatories in the world including Curtis\, Juilliard\, Peabody\, Manhattan School of Music\, SF Conservatory of Music\, New England Conservatory\, and the Glenn Gould School of Music at the Royal Conservatory. \nLSE was named the ensemble-in-residence at the Burchfield Penney Art Center and was invited to San Francisco to perform at the Hot Air Music Festival in 2020. During the pandemic\, LSE moved their programming online and hosted two full-length virtual concerts\, eight virtual trivia nights\, and participated in the inaugural Queen City Quarantine Concert presented by Rise Collaborative.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Buffalo Chamber Music Society | Belcea Quartet
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Buffalo Chamber Music Society presents the Belcea Quartet at Kleinhans Music Hall. \nOur season opens with the Belcea Quartet\, a distinguished British ensemble founded by students at the Royal College of Music. Praised by the New York Times for “technically accomplished and uncommonly probing” playing\, the quartet will present two concerts spanning more than two centuries of music. At the Mary Seaton Room they will play Mozart’s Quartet in F major\, K.590\, Szymanowski’s Quartet No.1 in C major\, Op.37\, and Schubert’s Quartet in D minor\, K.810\, one of his most famous quartets\, known as “Death and the Maiden.”[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”black”][vc_column_text] \nProgram\nMOZART  Quartet in F major\, K.590\nSZYMANOWSKI  Quartet No.1 in C major\, Op.37\nINTERMISSION\nSCHUBERT  Quartet in D minor\, K.810[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”black”][vc_column_text] \nAbout the Belcea Quartet\nCorina Belcea\, violin\nAxel Schacher\, violin\nKrzysztof Chorzelski\, viola\nAntoine Lederlin\, cello \nWhat the Belcea Quartet writes in the preface to its recording of the complete Beethoven String Quartets could also be described as their artistic creed. These musicians are not confined by traditional boundaries. It is perhaps the very fact of their diverse cultural backgrounds that is behind their dynamic and free interpretative style. Founded at the Royal College of Music in London in 1994\, the quartet is based in Great Britain. However\, the Romanian violinist Corina Belcea and the Polish violist Krzysztof Chorzelski\, the two founder members\, bring a very different artistic provenance to the ensemble while drawing from the best traditions of string quartet playing received from the quartet’s mentors: the members of the Alban Berg and Amadeus Quartets. This spectrum is extended by the French musicians Axel Schacher (violin) and Antoine Lederlin (violoncello). The Belcea Quartet blends its diverse influences into a common musical language. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Bob Poole: Nature Roars Back
DESCRIPTION:Experience an epic African wildlife park through the eyes of an Emmy Award-winning natural history cinematographer. \nA childhood in East Africa gave Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Bob Poole a fierce curiosity about the natural world as well as an adventurous spirit. For a six-part PBS/Nat Geo International series\, Bob drew on that experience to document the rebirth of a lost Eden: Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park\, a jewel of Africa’s parks system until civil war almost destroyed it. There\, he joined forces with rangers and scientists (including his sister\, renowned elephant researcher Joyce Poole)\, on perhaps the biggest conservation project on the planet. He’ll share secrets of filming lions\, crocs\, elephants\, and spectacular scenery\, and tell how he cracked the “Gorongosa code”—learning to read the landscape and find prime locations for filming the park’s spectacular wildlife. \nJoin the acclaimed cinematographer and filmmaker for unforgettable images and stories of Gorongosa’s majestic animals—and learn how the wild places we’ve broken can be put back together. \nTickets are $75 for a VIP experience that includes reserved seating and an invitation to a pre-event reception; $35 for general admission; and $15 for students.\nA two-event National Geographic Live package is available for $140 VIP; $60 general admission.
