Created by\, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz\, the cabaret-style performance traverses decades alongside songs such as A Case of You\, Hallelujah\, Big Yellow Taxi\, Suzanne\, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60’s and 70’s\, and of right now — offering us a story about the messiness of being human\, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth\, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another\, again and again. \nArtist Bios: \nRobbie Schaefer \nRobbie is a rabbi\, singer-songwriter and theatre/film artist. The guitarist and songwriter for the indie folk band Eddie From Ohio has several solo releases as well\, including the 2023 single Under the Sun. \nHe is the founder of Lamplighters\, an online community that cultivates small-batch\, relationship-driven\, inclusive Judaism. \nHe is also the founder of OneVoice\, an international non-profit that unites and empowers youth through music and the creative arts. The organization was active from 2011-2023 and completed projects in Tanzania\, Nicaragua\, India\, Greece\, and Israel. \nRobbie has shared the stage with Jason Mraz\, Sara Bareilles\, Josh Groban\, Keb ‘ Mo\, and Emmylou Harris\, among others. His first work for musical theater\, Light Years\, which explores his relationship with his father\, a Holocaust survivor\, saw its world premiere at the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in 2018. The musical is now a feature film entitled Burst The Silence (Rolling Pictures)\, which is due for release on streaming platforms in 2025. \nHe is currently at work on a new musical\, The Blue Poppy\, an Irish-Jewish ghost story written in collaboration with Scottish playwright Grace Barnes\, and Songs From The Wilderness\, a new album of Jewish musical midrash (interpretation)\, due for release in early 2026. \nAlso\, he likes olives. A lot. \nDanielle Wertz \nDanielle is a storyteller\, collaborator\, jazz musician\, composer and arranger. Her voice—described by DownBeat Magazine as “evocative… remarkably intimate\, expressive and poignant”—has earned her an international following as a jazz artist and growing recognition across disciplines. \n​Wertz began her career deeply rooted in the jazz tradition\, gaining early acclaim as the youngest semi-finalist in the 2015 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition and runner-up in the 2017 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition. After releasing two small ensemble albums as a bandleader and a third with Denmark’s Nordkraft Big Band that earned a 2026 GRAMMY® Award\, Danielle has affirmed her singular voice in contemporary vocal jazz and continues to expand her presence in genre-blurring large ensemble work. \nAfter completing her first European tour as a bandleader in the fall\, Danielle remains an avid collaborator internationally and at home in the NYC creative music scene. She is looking forward to being the featured artist on two major interdisciplinary projects in 2026: a Harriet Steinke original work commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects\, and a crossover jazz opera composed by Ben Morris with a libretto by Gina Stevensen. \nAlso\, she loves chocolate. We go on assignment with her to the Mediterranean Sea to explore how pirating shaped ancient cities. We also meet the icons of the Golden Age of Piracy\, explore the “pirate code\,” and then follow Lisa to the wreck of the most famous renegade\, Blackbeard. \nAbout Lisa Briggs:  \nLisa Briggs is an underwater archaeologist\, archaeological scientist\, and documentary filmmaker. She is best known for her work excavating shipwrecks and conducting scientific analysis on artifacts recovered from some of the world’s most important underwater archaeological sites including Blackbeard’s flagship\, the Queen Anne’s Revenge\, the Bronze Age Uluburun and Cape Gelidonya shipwrecks of Turkey\, the Hellenistic era Kyrenia ship of Cyprus\, the Classical age Mazotos shipwreck\, Cyprus\, and the Renaissance period Gnalic shipwreck of Croatia. Her scientific research focuses on ancient biomolecules recovered from shipwrecks\, including waterlogged grape seeds\, olive stones\, resins\, and the invisible residues trapped inside of ceramic jars. Through her DNA analysis of shipwreck plant materials\, Briggs attempts to trace the domestication and trade of important crops species throughout time.

DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall is pleased to present\nKenny Wayne Shepherd\nWednesday\, March 24\nShow at 8 PM | Doors at 6:30\nThirty years ago\, a Fender Strat-wielding teenager from Shreveport\, Louisiana by the name of Kenny Wayne Shepherd brought the blues back to the mainstream. It was 1995\, the era of furrow-browed grungesters\, when a sandy-haired guitar prodigy unapologetically celebrated a genre often pushed to the margins. With his fiery fretwork\, pop-rock hooks\, and reverence for the blues\, Shepherd’s arrival was a much-needed palette-cleanser from the existential dread of the times. \nNow\, three decades later\, Shepherd is as vital as ever. No longer the child prodigy\, he has ascended to master.  Still touring\, recording\, collaborating\, and evolving\, he’s returned to where it all began\, Ledbetter Heights. Shepherd’s latest is a re-recording of his landmark first album\, in honor of its 30th anniversary. In early 2026\, he and his band will launch a national tour celebrating the milestone’s anniversary. \n“This is the album that put me on the map\, and I still enjoy listening to it because my goal has always been to make music I want to listen to\,” Shepherd says. “Unfiltered and straight from the heart.” \nIn a short time\, Shepherd rocketed from small clubs to cracking the Top 10 with his debut album. Ledbetter Heights was an unequivocal success\, earning critical praise\, industry accolades\, a highly engaged fanbase that continues to this day\, and the respect of blues and rock heavyweights across generations. The album went Gold within months and was certified Platinum by early 1996. That same year\, Guitar World ranked Shepherd No. 3 blues artist behind only B.B. King and Eric Clapton. \nHis sophomore album\, 1997’s Trouble Is…\, garnered his first Grammy nomination and went on to become the longest-running album on the Billboard Blues Chart\, spending 20 consecutive weeks there. Since then\, Shepherd has earned six Grammy nominations; multiple Platinum and Gold-selling CDs; two Billboard Music Awards\, two Blues Music Awards\, and two Orville H. Gibson awards. He’s performed on major late-night shows\, headlined worldwide tours\, and has toured with legendary acts such as Van Halen\, Bob Dylan\, Aerosmith\, The Rolling Stones\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. \nShepherd’s longevity is rare for an artist who broke through so young\, rooted in a niche genre such as the blues. That could be because of Shepherd’s refusal to stand still. He’s a restless creative who has always had one foot firmly planted in the blues tradition and the other roaming the vast rock n’ roll landscape. \nHis 12-album oeuvre (plus a pair of albums with his supergroup\, The Rides\, featuring Stephen Stills and Barry Goldberg) showcases a wildly weaving artistic continuum spanning classic and contemporary sounds. Case in point: His last album was a collaboration with 91-years-old blues icon\, Bobby Rush\, and before that he released a double album of revved up\, genre-busting blues-rock. \nThat wanderlust was evident on Ledbetter Heights\, and Shepherd revisits the 12-song collection with gusto on this faithful re-recording. The perceivable differences between the albums are a refined musicality evident in the arrangements\, and the more nuanced and intentional guitar playing\, though the fire still rages – check out the bluesy bluster on the opener\, “Born with a Broken Heart.” Only one track\, “Riverside\,” deviates significantly. Slowed down and smokier\, it brings a quiet fire vibe not found in the 1995 version. \nAnother longtime collaborator on the re-record is legendary drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton. Layton was a founding member of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble\, and he has been with Shepherd since the original Ledbetter Heights. “I met him when I was 15\, and every night when I turn around and lock eyes with him\, I’m reminded of how incredible it is to be playing with him\,” Shepherd says. \nShepherd co-produced the project with legendary producer Jerry Harrison (Live\, Big Head Tod and The Monsters\, Talking Heads)\, who has produced four KWS-albums including Trouble Is…\, and its 25th anniversary re-recording. Guitar nerds will be pleased to know Shepherd re-recorded the tracks with his original 1995 rig. \n“Before I could identify with the lyrics\, I always could identify with the feeling of the blues. When you pour your heart out\, everyone can feel that\,” Shepherd says. While other kids played outside\, he holed up in his room with an imitation Strat\, learning Hendrix\, ZZ Top\, and SRV licks from a cassette. He emerged a self-taught\, self-made bluesman at 13\, wowing audiences in the Louisiana area. \nOne thing that distinguished Shepherd from other young blues guitar slingers at the time was his dedication to songcraft. Shepherd wrote or co-wrote all but four songs on his debut album. “I grew up hearing great choruses and melodies on the radio\, and I’ve applied that recipe to the blues\,” Shepherd says. \nSigned by legendary executive Irving Azoff at 16\, Shepherd recorded his debut while still in high school. While recording the album\, Shepherd went to school Monday through Wednesday and then drove to Memphis to track Ledbetter Heights. He squeezed in extra schoolwork between recording sessions and live gigs. \nHe named the album Ledbetter Heights in honor of an historic neighborhood in his hometown that pays homage to another blues great and Northwest Louisiana native\, Huddie Ledbetter. The album catapulted Shepherd into the mainstream\, and as a torchbearer of the blues – something he continues to take very seriously to this day. “When I signed my first record deal\, my mission was no matter how big or small my career became\, I was going to spread the word about the music and musicians that inspire me\,” Shepherd says. \nHe’s made good on that promise with the release of his award-winning documentary “10 Days Out; Blues From the Backroads\, scorching appearances on the Experience Hendrix tour\, film placements like Flight Risk\, and collaborations that bring the genre into new spaces. Shepherd has become one of the blues’ most consistent and credible ambassadors. \nUp next\, Shepherd and his band will be hitting the road for the Ledbetter Heights 30th Anniversary Tour. The shows will include a performance of the full 12-track album\, along with another set featuring highlights from his 30-year career. “Revisiting this album put me back in touch with the wonder and excitement of those days. I didn’t know what lay ahead at the time\,” he reflects\, “But I’m very grateful for what came from it.”

An eclectic curator\, unearthing rarely recorded\, forgotten songs with strong narratives\, power dynamics\, twists\, and humor. \nShe won the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010 and received Grammy Awards for three consecutive albums: “The Window\,” “Dreams and Daggers\,” and “For One To Love.” In 2020\, she received the MacArthur fellowship and Doris Duke Artist Award. Her debut and follow up Nonesuch Records projects\, “Ghost Song” (2022) and “Mélusine” (2023)\, have also each received two Grammy nominations. \n \nABOUT MAEVE GILCHRIST \nEdinburgh born harpist and composer Maeve Gilchrist has been credited as an innovator on her native instrument and taken the Celtic (lever) Harp to new levels of performance and visibility. Currently based in Kingston\,  NY\, Maeve tours internationally as a solo artist and composer as well as being a member of the grammy-nominated Silkroad ensemble\, Arooj Aftab’s Grammy winning Vulture Prince Ensemble and as part of the multi-disciplinary quartet Edges of Light. She has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Yo-Yo Ma\, Frankie Gavin\, Esperanza Spalding\, Bruce Molsky\, Ambrose Akinmusire and Solas. As a composer\, Maeve straddles the worlds of folk and classical with pieces including her original concerto for symphony orchestra and harp (a co-commission with Luke Benton)\, a three-movement Samuel Beckett-inspired piece for harp\, string quartet and sound samples which was premiered at the Edinburgh International Harp Festival in the spring of 2018 and a number of other pieces for harp ensembles and strings. She is a regular visiting artist at the Berklee College of Music and has had a number of  instructional books published by Hal Leonard and 80 days publishing. Maeve has released a number of albums to her name on the Adventure Music Record Label as well as being a featured soloist on the  Dreamworks blockbuster movie soundtrack\, How to tame your dragon: The hidden world.  Her most recent album\, The Harpweaver\, has garnered international acclaim including a five-star review from the Irish Times who described it as “buoyant\, sprightly and utterly beguiling….a snapshot of a musician at the top of her game”. \nMaeve is the co-music director of the WGBH holiday show\, a Christmas Celtic sojourn and the co-artistic director of the brand new Rockport Celtic Music festival; an innovative new festival focused on cross-curation and the outer-fringes of Celtic Music. \nABOUT MAZZ SWIFT \nCritically acclaimed as one of America’s most talented and versatile performers today\, Violin/Vox/Freestyle Composition artist Mazz Swift has engaged audiences all over the world with the signature weaving of song\, melody and improvisation that they call MazzMuse. Swift is a 2021 United States Artist and 2019 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow\, currently working on a series of compositions that involve conducted improvisation\, and that are centered around protest\, spirituals\, and the Ghanaian concept of ‘Sankofa’: looking back to learn how to move forward. \nABOUT NIWEL TSUMBU \nNiwel Tsumbu​ is a guitarist and singer who grew up with the hip-swinging Soukous music from the Democratic Republic Of The Congo. Strongly influenced by guitarists such as Paco de Lucia\, Luambo Makiadi\, Baden Powell and Joe Pass\, Niwel Tsumbu has amalgamated these different styles and blurred the boundaries of African\, Classical and Jazz music with his amazing virtuosity\, passion and graceful guitar playing. \n  \n  \n  \nABOUT FRANCESCO TURRISI \nFrancesco Turrisi has been defined as a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot.” He has released five critically acclaimed albums as a leader and two as co-leader (“Tarab” a cross boundary innovative ensemble that blends Irish and Mediterranean traditional music\, and “Zahr” a project that looks at connections between southern Italian traditional music and Arabic music). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nABOUT KAORU WATANABE \nComposer and instrumentalist Kaoru Watanabe’s work is rooted in traditional Japanese performing arts and infused with experimental and improvisational elements. His signature skill of merging the music\, literature\, and aesthetic philosophies of Japan with disparate styles and mediums has made him a highly sought-after collaborator\, working with such iconic artists as André 3000\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Wes Anderson\, Mikhail Baryshnikov\, Laurie Anderson\, Jason Moran\, and Japanese National Living Treasure Bando Tamasaburo. The son of two St. Louis Symphony Orchestra musicians\, Watanabe studied jazz at the Manhattan School of Music before moving to Japan to study noh-kan flute with Matsuda Hiroyuki and Edo Matsuri Bayashi with Suzuki Kyosuke in Tokyo. He then moved to Sado\, a remote island in the Sea of Japan\, where he undertook a rigorous two-year apprenticeship with the groundbreaking Japanese taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo. During this time\, he trained in traditional Japanese folk dancing\, singing\, drumming\, woodworking\, tea ceremony\, rice farming\, running\, Noh\, and Kyogen. Watanabe then became the first American to join the ensemble as a performing member\, serving as an ambassador of Japanese music on the world’s greatest stages and as artistic director of their annual music festival\, leading collaborations with luminaries such as Zakir Hussain\, Giovanni Hidalgo\, and Tamangoh. After a decade in Japan\, Watanabe returned to New York to pursue a solo career\, performing with and composing for top artists of their respective genres\, such as flamenco dancer Eva Yerbabuena\, Mongolian Official State Morin Khuur player Tserendorj\, multiple Grammy Award-winning rapper Residente\, visual artist Simone Leigh\, Rhiannon Giddens and the Silkroad Ensemble\, and many others\, all while championing the essential qualities of Japanese flutes and percussion. In 2024\, Watanabe launched Bloodlines Interwoven\, a multifaceted commissioning project\, festival\, and ensemble celebrating heritage\, immigration\, and diaspora through music\, cuisine\, and storytelling.

Frogs can turn nearly invisible\, leap more than 20 times their body length\, and defend themselves with poison. We go on assignment with conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer Jonathan Kolby to discover all kinds of incredible abilities and springy biodiversity. \nAbout Jonathan Kolby:  \nJonathan Kolby became involved in wildlife conservation at the age of 15\, when he volunteered on his first expedition to document biodiversity in Southeast Asia. He has since been involved in 20 field expeditions spanning the globe\, from Honduras to Madagascar to Hong Kong. In 2007\, Kolby was awarded a National Geographic Young Explorers Grant to study chytrid fungus and amphibian declines in Honduras. After completing this project\, Kolby decided to dedicate himself to combatting global amphibian declines and extinction. He recently established the Honduras Amphibian Research & Conservation Center to specifically prevent amphibian extinctions in Honduras. Kolby completed his Ph.D. at James Cook University in Australia\, where he studied the global spread of amphibian chytrid fungus and ranavirus. Kolby has published over a dozen scientific papers\, written blog posts for National Geographic and the IUCN Amphibian Specialist Group\, and currently runs a citizen science project on iNaturalist called “Saving Salamanders with Citizen Science” to help monitor for the emergence of salamander chytrid fungus in the United States. To make science more accessible to the general public\, Kolby actively uses photography and social media to help raise awareness about wildlife conservation issues. He also manages a YouTube channel featuring videos and short films produced for the Honduras Amphibian Research & Conservation Center.
